Melissa is 18 years old and has been vaulting with Spruce Valley Vaulters for almost 10 years. She instantly fell in love with the artistry and horsemanship that is involved in this equestrian sport and enjoys both coaching and competing. Vaulting has provided Melissa with many opportunities; she has traveled to British Columbia and California for CVI competitions and has had clinics with top level vaulters from around the world.
Recently graduated from West Central High School where she received Honours with Distinction, Melissa is taking a year off to work as a barista and save up money for college. She will be continuing her vaulting career for the foreseeable future and will be taking her accreditation to be a Provincial Level Vaulting Coach within the year. Becoming a vaulting judge is also something she plans to work towards. After her gap year she will be applying to colleges in order to become a Physical Therapy Rehabilitator.
After she tore her ACL and meniscus in the summer of 2017, Melissa was inspired to help others with their own physical injuries and limitations, “Having to come back to vaulting after a substantial injury like that was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” says Melissa. “It tests you both physically and mentally. Despite all the hardship it brought, I’m thankful for everything it taught me.”
Melissa is excited for her future but says she will miss her coach Rebecca Marland, her lunger Amber Callan, her vaulting horses and all of her teammates greatly.
“I will cherish the memories I’ve shared with all the people and the horses who have been involved in my career. I am forever grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life and without them, I would not be who I am today,” states Melissa.
