Summer is still in full swing, which means it’s still worth practicing these sun-safety tips when you’re enjoying time outside with your pup! Here are a few tips to prevent, identify, and treat heat stroke in dogs.
◾️ Heat stroke can happen to all dogs, but high-energy breeds, short-nosed dogs, and senior pups are the most at risk.
◾️ You’ll know your dog is getting too hot if they pant excessively, get a glassy look in their eye, seem confused or disoriented, or show bright red gums and excessive drooling.
◾️ To prevent heat stroke in dogs, make sure to never leave them locked in a vehicle (even in mild heat), always bring water on longer walks, and look for routes with plenty of shade for your dog to rest in.
◾️ If you think your pup is developing heat stroke, the best move is to get them to a vet ASAP. On your way, you can try pouring cool (not cold) water on your pup’s armpits, bellies, and head, and make sure to turn the AC on.
