Helping Paws - Okanagan, Canada We facilitate adoption in B.C., WA, and OR of dogs abandoned in Texas. A small volunteer-run foster based rescue, we rely on donations to help dogs in need.

Etransfer / paypal to [email protected] Texas has a dog problem, or to be more accurate - a dog owner problem. Many people don't spay/neuter their pets. Many don't use preventatives for heartworm, ticks and fleas. But worst of all is the attitude that dogs are disposable. The cute puppy whose owner didn't bother to train chews a shoe and gets driven to the end of a country lane and du

mped. There are estimated to be over 500,000 stray dogs in Houston alone. Pounds have a mandate to euthanize when full. Strays often only get a 3 day hold. Owner surrenders have no hold before eu. Helping Paws - Okanagan works with volunteers in southern Texas who network dogs in pounds to find adopters or rescues to save them. These volunteers are very good at assessing dogs' demeanours and we trust their judgement. Usually that is all we know about a dog when we decide to rescue it. We pull dogs from the pounds often not knowing whether they have heartworm or other diseases until they are seen by a veterinarian. Unexpected medical treatments, and boarding because of a shortage of fosters, makes rescuing Texas dogs an expensive proposition. The alternative for these dogs doesn't bear thinking about. Occasionally a caring person rescues a stray, and cares for it in their home until a forever home is found for the dog. We vet those dogs and find adopters in British Columbia, Washington or Oregon states. Street feeders (street angels) feed strays and make posts of dogs on their feeding route. Occasionally we rescue some of these, usually needing donations for the extra medical care for broken legs, mange, wounds, and boarding to get them safe immediately. The dogs you see on this page are some of the lucky few that were rescued and will get out of Texas, and make the 2400 mile journey to their furever home. We appreciate you opening your home to them, and they will too. We do not have a local facility. The dogs arrive directly to their adopters or to foster homes. Donations are very much appreciated. "We adopted Beau 2 years ago (via Helping Paws in Chambers County). I wanted to happily tell you that the slow kill heartworm plan has worked! After 3 rounds of doxycycline (6 months apart)… Today Beau underwent cardiac ultrasound which showed no evidence of heartworm and he has a normal heart, EKG and blood pressure. We are so happy. Beau continues to have a great life with us - he is so happy too!
Thanks again for ushering Beau into our lives. We love him so much!"

Sweet Nora is still looking for a new adult-only (12+) home. She is currently in Spokane.

Sweet Nora is still looking for a new adult-only (12+) home. She is currently in Spokane.

Nora is a pretty, medium-sized female hound mix, between 5 and 6 years old. She is spayed and weighs about 44 lb (20 kg).
She was rescued by Helping Paws Okanagan in September 2021 and adopted by a young couple. There are now toddlers in the family, which are making Nora very nervous. For this reason, her family made the difficult decision to find Nora the calm, quiet home she needs.
Please, no derogatory comments or ‘helpful’ advice. We at Helping Paws Okanagan agree this is best for Nora.

More photos and videos are in the comments (change Most Relevant to All Comments).

Behavior: Nora is shy but very sweet. Her big brown eyes just beg for pets. She is somewhat fearful of strangers but warms up quickly with soft words and reassuring. She is quite playful and affectionate. Nora always wants to be included and needs gentle guidance, lots of love and calm consistency to know that she is safe in her home. She doesn’t like yelling, can be easily startled but is food motivated and very trainable.
Nora does not counter surf. She is not destructive towards furniture, clothing or shoes but loves destroying her squeaky duck toys!
Nora infrequently digs, usually because she is trying to catch a rodent. She likes to chase birds, squirrels, chipmucks and cats. She is naturally curious and wants to learn. She would take herself for an exploration if she found an open door or gate. Nora is a fairly vocal dog and likes to talk to us. Her Texas roots show up on sunny days - she loves sunning herself when it’s warm out!

Energy Level: Medium – loves walks twice a day. Would probably enjoy daily jogs or hikes but enjoys a nap for the remainder of the day. Loves to use her nose!

Other dogs: Nora seems to need a pack-leader dog who tells her what to do (common with insecure dogs). She is unsure of new dogs and doesn’t like little dogs.
Nora went weekly to a dog day-training facility where she apparently did fine around other dogs. They worked on correcting her play behaviour and her confidence around other dogs grew a lot. It seems that Nora did not have many or any dog friends at an early age (before rescue) so is unsure of other dogs.
Don’t know if she exhibits possessiveness around other dogs – it’s always prudent to feed dogs separately anyway.

Cats: Not fully known but unlikely. Has prey drive with neighborhood cats. She is a hound after all!

Children: Nora is not happy with young children around, which is usually the case with nervous, shy dogs. She prefers calm adults. An older child (12+) who is calm and respectful to dogs would probably be fine.

Housetrained: Yes, great about waiting by the door. She could be trained to ring a bell.

Training: Nora loves treats and is very treat motivated. She is very smart. She knows “bed”, “sit”, “down” (lay down), “climb” (jump up or jump down) and “leave it” consistently. Still learning “come” ;) Understands “potty”, “food”, “car ride”, “walk”, and probably some I’m forgetting.
She knows how to walk properly on a leash. “With me” has her walking right next to you. “Go be a dog” is her walking ahead of you and sniffing, doing more of whatever she wants and can pull on her leash during this. When in “with me” she knows to sit when you stop walking.

Crate training: Nora doesn’t like confined spaces, but does acclimate to a crate. Because this is a necessary skill for vet visits, emergencies etc. she should have more gentle, consistent crate training so that if an emergency occurs, she is already used to being crated. Having another dog nearby in another crate helps her be a lot more comfortable with crates. Her trainer had no issues with her crating, but her owners have difficulty.

Good in car: 100% YES. LOVES car rides, especially front seat where she can see what is happening. Buckled in of course 😊

Behaviors that need work: Nora is well-trained in obedience. She needs help with behaviours stemming from lack of confidence, fear of abandonment and of strangers. She currently is anxious and can be reactive to people she doesn’t know. These behaviours reduce as a dog builds confidence and comes to trust that their family will keep them safe. It is very important that her new adopter is a ‘pack leader’ type so that Nora doesn’t feel she has to be the protector (which makes an insecure dog anxious).
Dogs like Nora do very well with dog sports that build their confidence while keeping a distance from other people and dogs. Being a hound mix, Nora would probably enjoy Tracking, Barn Hunt, and other scent sports.

Ideal home: Nora needs a quiet home and ‘pack leaders’ to make her feel safe. Adults only, or older (12+) calm children who are respectful to dogs. Her new people should have experience with under-confident dogs. An older, bigger well-adjusted confident (but not alpha) dog who she can learn from and feel safe with. Some property for her to explore, sniff and be a hound would be ideal.

Rescue Story: This shy, very sweet girl was dumped in a local neighborhood in Jasper, TX in August 2021. She was brought to the pound by a homeowner. She appeared to have had a litter recently but her babies were not with her. ☹ Helping Paws Okanagan pulled her from the pound and boarded her until she was adopted.
“We adopted Nora from Helping Paws Okanagan in Nov. 2021. It was a bit of a whirlwind and I don’t think we were prepared but we fell totally in love with Nora. She took a while to really show her true self and start talking to us. We have loved watching her grow and explore and hope that someone can help her in this next phase of her life, to continue this growth we have worked so hard to achieve. “

Medical: Nora is up to date on vaccines and had a dental in Oct/25. She is spayed and microchipped. Full medical records since her rescue are available. Nora is currently on anti-anxiety meds, which should no longer be needed in a calm home.
Nora has allergies to poultry and dairy. She is currently eating Hills SD Z/D. And grass, Nora likes to eat grass 😉

Adoption: There will be a reduced adoption fee for Nora. Nora is currently in Spokane, but her owners are willing to drive her within a few hours distance, and can cross the border into Canada.

Adopted.

This is a Courtesy Post. Please read the entire profile before contacting Bauer’s foster, as he requires an owner experienced with behavioural issues.

Bauer is a 5-year-old male Goldendoodle, 30lbs, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped.

Bauer’s story: Bauer was a covid dog ☹ He has not been socialized properly with people, and apparently spent a lot of time in a crate. He doesn’t seem to have had much of a relationship with the owners who surrendered him. He is well trained (obedience) but has some behaviours that need addressing. These behaviours seem to stem from not having consistency in his life, or a trustworthy human leader. When he looks at you, there is no emotion in his eyes ☹
Bauer was with a rescue agency in Ontario, during which time he had 2 fosters then was in boarding for several months (his history is somewhat unclear).
A nice family in Penticton adopted him to be a friend for their 14 yr old dog. But when Bauer arrived, it turned out he resource guards which scares the poor old dog who is now very afraid of Bauer. So Bauer is being fostered until his forever home is found.

People: Bauer is fine with people outside his home, meeting strangers politely, a bit standoff-ish. He is good with his fosters but gets protective of strangers in the home.

Energy level: Medium/high, likes to be busy but has an off switch. He loves being outside and running in the yard, by himself or with other dogs. Bauer is quite calm, and prefers to sit and watch. He gets over-stimulated by a busy home. He is currently given vitamins and Clomicalm min doze (20mg) daily for anxiety.
Baeur has not been destructive to furniture or shoes/clothes. He loves chewing his Kong and other toys. Loves to grab paper towels, tissue and toilet paper to shred and chew them. Has tried to run with socks and things that he can grab sometimes.
Bauer doesn’t need a lot of mental stimulation if his people keep him interested – ideal for a single or a couple of homebodies.

Other Dogs: Bauer doesn’t seek out other dogs, so would probably do best as the only dog in the home. Outdoors he is fine with other dogs, though somewhat selective. He plays off leash but minds his own business most of the time. He is sometimes cautious with bigger dogs and get scared if there is a loud bark. See video in comments.

Cats: unknown, curious but doesn’t try to chase. So cats are a maybe.

Children: Only older children 12+, due to his resource guarding and uncertainty with unknown people, and his anxiety in a busy inconsistent home.

Housetrained: Yes, paws the door when he needs to potty.

Training: Walks well on leash (see video in comments). Bauer is very treat and food motivated, knows “Sit”, learning “Leave it”. Sits and shakes a paw.
Loves car rides and has spent full days in the car travelling, with proper breaks.

Crate trained: While he does not like spending time in his crate, Bauer will enter the crate when tempted with a treat and does scratch to try and get out but settles down after some time.

Behaviour:
Bauer has behaviours that indicate that he grew up in a home where he was treated as a ‘thing’ instead of a living being with needs and emotions. He seems to not have had much interaction with people and other dogs so doesn’t know proper behaviour.
He seems to need to control his home environment – understandable when your people don’t respect your needs.
He resource guards and is possessive of his toys and food around other dogs and people.
He counter surfs. Bauer is very determined to get human food and reacts when stopped. He needs to be in a separate area while food is being prepared and eaten, as he is obsessed with human food.
He doesn’t seem to have had people respect his space, so is protective of his space – he prefers to approach people rather than them reach out and pet him. Like any dog – respect his space, and he’ll learn he can trust and respect you.
Bauer doesn’t need obedience training, what he really needs is a leader – someone he knows will keep him safe, respect his space, and enforce rules and boundaries. With consistency he will learn that he can trust his person.
Bauer will be an amazing dog once he learns appropriate behaviour, and eventually will form a special bond with a human he trusts.
Bauer’s ideal home: Quiet, consistent routine. One or two adults who are experienced with behavioural training and who are kind, convincing, consistent ‘pack leaders’.
Perhaps a cat but no other dog. A fenced yard to hang out in.
Bauer does NOT need cuddling, that would weird him out. He may become affectionate once he forms a bond with a person he trusts.

** Bauer will come with 2 private training sessions with a trainer in South Okanagan **
** In lieu of an adoption fee, we request that you make a donation to Helping Paws Okanagan **

Remember the 4 shepherd mix pups found and looked after by a nice man in spring 2024 until we could find adopters? We just received an update on Gigi (previously Jazz) from her momma who lives in Oregon. She thought Gigi may be too small for her Irish Wolfhound fur sister.
"Gigi is 75 pounds!! I guess she turned out to not be too small. Such a great pup"

An update on Kelda, previously Texanne:

"I wanted to share a little 1 year update on Kelda! She’s becoming more independent and confident every day, and it’s been so fun to watch her personality shine. She loves exploring different sniff spots and has discovered a love for beachs. She loves digging and catching sand worms!

This summer, Kelda started learning how to paddle board and has joined me on a few camping trips. She’s still adjusting to sleeping in a tent, but she’s doing great and getting more comfortable each time.

She’s such a happy, curious girl and continues to bring so much joy into my life. Thank you again for all that you do and for matching me with her!"

Hard to believe it's been a year since Kelda found her home and momma. Time flies!
