🐾 Blastomycosis ("Blasto") in Dogs: What Pet Owners Should Know 🐾

At Georgian Animal Hospital, we want to help keep your pets safe and healthy. One disease we're seeing in our region is blastomycosis, often called "Blasto."

Blasto is caused by a fungus that lives in moist soil, especially in wooded areas, near rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Dogs can become infected by breathing in fungal spores while sniffing, digging, or exploring outdoors.

⚠️ Common signs include:
• Persistent cough
• Difficulty breathing
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite and weight loss
• Eye inflammation or vision changes
• Limping or swollen lymph nodes

Early diagnosis is important because blastomycosis can become serious if left untreated.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What about people?
Blastomycosis can also affect humans, but you cannot catch it from your dog. Both people and dogs become infected by breathing in fungal spores from the environment. In very rare situations involving direct contact with infected tissues or draining wounds, appropriate precautions should be taken. If you or a family member develop persistent respiratory symptoms after spending time in areas where Blasto is found, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider.
