Hiking in bear country? BE AWARE of your surroundings!

Often times, there will be signs in your environment that a bear is close before you actually encounter them…

1️⃣ You’ll hear thuds, rustling bushes, or cracking branches👂🏼

2️⃣ You’ll observe changes in your dogs behaviour and/or body language 🐕

Luckily on this day, we heard noises consistent with bear activity, immediately recalled and leashed the dogs, then encountered this bear just moments after 😮‍💨

Your dog is also a great source of information! If they seem to be intently sniffing more then usual or exhibit defensive or alertness (think stiff body, hackles raised, pointed ears, puffing cheeks etc) it’s best to stay on leash. Never doubt your ‘spidey senses’ in these situations as they could prevent a dangerous encounter.

Stay safe out there and let’s all do our part in keeping these beautiful creatures safe 💜

ATTN all dog walkers ‼️

We all know how much your doggies love to get outside with you, but did you know that you and your dog may be increasing the spread of invasive species? 🫣

The Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council, a non-profit that works to reduce the threat of invasive species in the Sea to Sky, is asking us to leave invasive species behind!

We can help do this by:
REMOVING plants, seeds, and mud from boots, clothes & gear 🥾
BRUSHING off any seeds clinging to you or your pet before entering & leaving 🐕
STAYING on designated roads & trails 🌲
REPORTING any invasive species you come across 📝

Invasive species are harmful to local biodiversity and can be toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals. Join us in giving them the brush off! 💪

We are so excited to introduce to you our newest Small Pack Walk Leader, Auntie Amy! 🐶 🎉

'Hi, I'm Amy! I'm originally from Australia and moved to Canada in November last year. Since then, I've fallen in love with the incredible mountains and beautiful nature here, living here in Whistler has been such an amazing experience.
I've always had a special connection with dogs. They teach us so much about unconditional love, living in the moment, and finding joy in the simple things. Throughout my life, dogs have been some of my closest companions and greatest sources of support.'

Professional dog walkers don’t just hope that an emergency will never happen, they prepare for them! 🚨🆘

During one of Steph’s morning Small Pack Walk's, everyone was happily playing and enjoying the trails when she heard one of the dogs yelping. Steph responded immediately and discovered a puncture wound on one of the dogs.

Due to the location and angle of the wound, Steph was unable to secure any types of bandage from her first aid kit, and got right to work getting Cosmo into an emergency rescue harness. Steph carried cosmo on her back for the 30 minute hike out while communicating with other Doggy Tales team members to ensure Cosmo would receive immediate care.

Cosmo sustained a deep puncture wound and abdominal bruising. Luckily there was no internal bleeding and her vitals were solid so she was able to head home. We’re very happy to report that other than being a little sad about wearing a cone and missing out on walks, Cosmo is doing well and should make a full recovery in a couple of weeks! 📈

Thank you to Steph for her strength, care, and compassion. To Coast Mountain Vets for providing exceptional emergency veterinary care. And to Mountain Dogware rescue harnesses for allowing us to efficiently get Cosmo the care she needed.

Dog walkers, if you don't already carry an emergency rescue harness with you on every hike, please take this as a sign!
