Eyelid agenesis is a congenital condition in cats characterized by missing upper eyelids along with other ocular abnormalities. The lack of eyelids results in fur rubbing against the cornea leading to irritation, discharge, and potential ulceration. While severe cases require reconstructive surgery, early intervention—including medical management or surgical procedures—results in an excellent prognosis for a normal life. Learn more about managing this condition in the full blog post.

Eyelid agenesis is a congenital condition where a portion of the upper eyelid fails to develop properly in the womb.

Would you know how to spot a "silent" eye emergency in your horse?

Horses are experts at hiding pain, but their eyes tell the real story. One of our favorite subtle tricks is the "Eyelash Test"—if your horse’s lashes are pointing toward the ground instead of straight out, they are likely squinting from discomfort.

What to do while you wait for the vet:
✅ DO: Move them to a stall to keep them calm and quiet.
✅ DO: Put on a clean fly mask or cross tie them to stop them from rubbing.
❌ DON'T: Apply old ointments. Using a steroid on an undiagnosed ulcer can lead to a ruptured eye.

To begin our discussion about new treatment modalities, lets start with a case!

This is a 5 year old paint horse gelding with a 1 year history of ulcerated, poorly healing lesion on the upper right eyelid.

What is the most likely diagnosis?

Dr. Tara Richards just returned from the International Equine Ophthalmology Consortium (IEOC) conference. Over the next week or so we will be sharing some of the new and interesting information presented at this conference, including a great new modality for treating squamous cell carcinoma, the most common eye tumor of the horse! Photos of the daily "commute" to the conference location. Any guesses where this is?!
