What I’d Tell Myself at 34

Today’s my birthday. If I could give my 33-year-old self a heads-up a year ago, this is what I would say:

You’ll look back on your five months in Colombia fondly—but it might be the last time you go for a while.

You’ll struggle with not having a job. But trust me—this is a gift you’ll recognize later.

You’ll learn who you can depend on—and become someone more dependable for others, too.

You’ll feel called to an “East Coast Summer.” Trust that feeling. It matters.

You’ll rediscover home with adventures all over Atlantic Canada: the Fundy Footpath (finally!), Grand Manan, the Seawall Trail in Cape Breton, and the full East Coast Trail in Newfoundland. It’ll be amazing!

You’ll become better friends with your sister.

You’ll try new things like ocean paddleboarding—and love it.

This will be hard to hear: You’ll lose your mom—a pain unlike anything you’ve ever known.

Her final gift will be helping you know what matters most in this life.

You’ll say your final words to your father—with peace, clarity and grace.

You’ll be awakened—to grief, joy, and the fullness of life.

You’ll visit Calgary and rest with friends. Let yourself.

You’ll house-sit in beautiful places—don’t worry about settling down. You need to keep moving.

You’ll reconnect with old friends and family: they’re still your people.

You’ll show up for your siblings and nieces—especially at Christmastime. That matters.

You’ll find a new job—when you’re ready. Trust the timing.

You’ll go through hell. But you’ll become stronger in mind, body, and spirit.

You’ll start a health routine and stick with it.

You’ll feel alone at times.

You’ll meet people who teach you about love, loss, and becoming.

If you’re lacking confidence, do hard things.

If you’re lacking motivation, move—momentum will find you.

You won’t be the same person. You’re not supposed to be.

The hard thing and the right thing are usually the same.

Let gentleness and strength coexist in you.

And Thomas—above all—you’ll end this year deeply grateful for yourself and all the people who matter to you.

You’ll be proud of the life you’re building, and the person you are.

I love spending time on "the island" 🌊

Where I come from, that can only mean Prince Edward Island — known for pristine beaches, piles of potatoes, and many (Lennie) Gallants. Not even kidding… some are my relatives 😁

If you're going over to PEI this year, why not get up to North Cape? It's one of the best hikes on the island, with yet another neat lighthouse, and a lovely family-friendly spot (be careful near the cliffs). The wind turbines are pretty cool!

Tombstone Park will always be one of my favourite backcountry adventures. If you're planning a trip to Yukon, make some time to visit Tombstone — the Patagonia of the North ⛰️

48 km, 4-5 days, one helluva trek 🙌

A little bit about me...

I have been "flexible living" for the past couple of years — prioritizing travel, experiences, and connections over settling down in one particular place. I won't be a nomad forever, but it's been a positive thing for me. For now.

I like to say home is where my people are. 🧡

During this time, I have been able to live and work in Colombia (for 5 months), travel to and in different countries (Costa Rica, Panama, Ghana), and spend time across Canada including Atlantic Canada (all 4 provinces), Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, BC, and even Yukon (I know I need to spend more time in Manitoba and Sask 😄).

How do I do this? Well, it takes a ton of planning!

And I use a platform called TrustedHousesitters, where pet sitters and people with pets/houses can sign up and match up.

If you're curious, check it out: https://www.trustedhousesitters.com/refer/RAF728123/?utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=refer-a-friend&utm_campaign=refer-a-friend

**I'll get 2 months free for every new join**

Have you heard about the Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit in British Columbia?

A rectangular chain of 10 lakes, 2 rivers, and 11 km of portages. Many campsites to choose from. I solo paddled the 120-km route over 5 days back in August 2023. Such backcountry bliss!

Life’s an Adventure

Life’s an adventure. It sounds cliche, but is it true? Twists and turns, mountain highs and valley lows, extreme beauty and painful loss—the possibilities of life are endless. There’s so much unknown waiting to be discovered. Life is an adventure.

If you know me, you know that I was born and raised in Nova Scotia. I spent hours outside growing up, and I’ve come to love Canada’s outdoor playground. We find who we are in the wilderness. Camping, hiking, biking, paddling, swimming, and more. I’m reminded of life’s interconnectedness in the great outdoors. We are not separate from nature; We’re a small part of it.

I feel the same way when I travel. It’s humbling to realize one’s tiny place in the world. You can’t drive across African plains, gaze upon Mount Everest, visit ancient cities and ruins, or stare out over oceans without feeling a sense of smallness. A sense of wonder. I often say that the more I learn, the more I realize how little I actually know. And the more I travel, the more I understand how little of the world I’ve known. But... I want to know.

Right now, I’m a Calgarian. I’ve come to appreciate this city and the joy of spending time in the Canadian Rockies. I’m an ordinary guy with an extraordinary drive for adventure. But of course, this is only one facet of who I am as a person. I also love ice cream and can binge Netflix for days. I have a career, family, friends, pets, and bills. Nevertheless, adventure is an important priority for me.
