When Daylight Saving Time ends, we get our extra hour of sleep and our dogs get a mystery. The clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, and nobody tells your dog, so suddenly dinner feels late and the hungry stare shows up right on their old schedule. 🐾

The comforting part is this: dogs run on your routine more than the clock on the wall, and dogs kept on steady daily schedules tend to catch up within about a day. You can make it even easier with a simple trick. Starting a few days ahead, shift meals and walks about 15 minutes later each day, and by Sunday the change is already made and your dog barely notices.

Halloween is one of my favorite nights of the year, and it is also one night that asks a little extra from us as dog parents. It tends to bring two kinds of trouble at once: the year’s biggest candy risk and the year’s busiest front door.

On the candy side, chocolate is one of the most common pet poison calls, and the darker it is, the more dangerous. Xylitol, found in sugar-free candy, gum, and some peanut butters, can cause harm in tiny amounts, and even those little boxes of raisins are a real risk. Keep every candy bowl where paws cannot reach, including the kids’ haul, and if your dog does get into something, do not wait for signs. Call your vet, your nearest emergency vet, or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435.

For the busy front door, set your dog up in a room away from the entrance with some white noise, give a long-lasting chew, walk them before trick-or-treating hours, and double-check those collar tags tonight.

A dog can wiggle each nostril on its own, and that small movement does real work. It helps them pin down the exact direction a scent is coming from. Behavioral studies have found something even more fascinating: dogs often take in a new or emotionally intense smell with their right nostril first, then shift to the left once the odor becomes familiar. So the next time your dog freezes mid-walk with their nose working overtime, know there is real processing happening in there. 🐾

National Make a Dog’s Day landed on my calendar, so of course my dog got the full holistic VIP treatment. 🐾

We started with a fresh breakfast of shredded chicken, steamed carrots, blueberries, bone broth, and a pinch of herbs. Then came the ultimate sniff walk, zero rushing, because all that sniffing is real mental work for them. We skipped the artificial drive-thru sugar for a frozen kefir cup with a little chamomile, and finished with a tiny bit of herbal paw balm. Did they ask for a spa day? No. Are they living for it? Absolutely.

Newborn puppies come into the world functionally blind, deaf, and toothless. Their eyes and ears stay sealed at birth, which is nature’s way of protecting those delicate neurological structures while everything finishes developing. The eyes usually open around 10 to 14 days, and hearing follows close behind at about two to three weeks. Those first weeks of newborn puppies care are all about warmth, closeness, and letting that remarkable little body do exactly what it was designed to do. 🐾
