Rehoming Senior dogs - no, can't do.

At MidnightSolo, our Black Russian Terriers live full lives as family members. Our dogs are bred with purpose, trained with skill, and cherished for life. We don’t rehome our seniors.

When a MidnightSolo dog retires, they stay with us—respected, active, and still deeply involved in our lives. And believe me, there’s no shortage of family and friends who would line up to take one of our elders—but they’re not going anywhere.

Every BRT we keep is with us from the very beginning: from pre-breeding planning and pregnancy confirmation, to whelping beside their dam, and raising litters. Then, when the time is right, we keep a special pup—like my Sidekick, Kicka.

Kicka lived and trained by my side for 9.5 years. She competed up to age 9, earned over **100 titles and designations**, and gave me everything she had with loyalty, drive, and joy. She helped raise her niece Meera, and many litters over the years, and now, as she approaches 10 years old, Kicka enjoys retirement with dignity—still training for fun, still walking by my side, still part of every day. I won’t let her jump anymore, but I can’t stop her from trying. That’s heart. That’s a real working dog.

Kicka’s life has been better than most dogs ever experience—and more accomplished than some entire kennels combined.

I will continue to cherish every single day with my Sidekick till the very end....
When her time comes, she will leave this world in my arms. My heart will break—but I’ll know she lived the kind of life every dog should have.

This post is not intended to shame anyone. I am not anti re-home. I do not think it’s selfish when it’s in the dogs best interest. I will always believe the dogs needs come first - especially when that means rehoming. There are so many posts from kennels about why rehoming and retirement homes are a great thing for dogs. And often, in many situations a rehome from working kennel is an amazing thing.

But this post is for the kennels that chose to retire their dogs at home. The kennels that see their dogs through their careers, through retirement, and to death.

I have been doing a lot of soul searching. I have had an extremely emotional few weeks since both of my retired seniors have been diagnosed with cancers. These are the dogs that got me started down an incredible path in life that’s led me to everything. They got me active early on and helped me through my personal health struggles. They got me started in mushing. They ran in teams and helped me train my first racing team and continue even to this day to train puppies basic commands and house manners. They saw me to the top of the 46 highest peaks in NY state. They are my best friends.

They are growing old.

Those of us that go through this absolutely do not get enough credit. We have to manage balancing running and training our youngsters, race, travel, and all the expenses that come with it but we also have to manage our seniors. We have to keep them happy with their own activities and snuggle time. Their aging bodies require special care, special diets, special physical activity, and extra veterinary expense. While we ride the roller coaster of competing competitively we also ride the roller coaster of watching our seniors age. The emotional toll is immense. Having to pick who gets to come and who stays home…. It hurts sometimes. Seeing your friends get new youngsters to compete with and you know you can’t because you have to manage your kennel numbers to accommodate your seniors. You have to build your team with the dogs you have. This means you don’t have an A team and a B or C team. It means you have an A team. And there’s no room for swapping out. Every dog has to be built for success through all of their unique challenges. It is so rewarding but it is also sometimes incredibly hard mentally because you are using all of your resources and there is ZERO room for anything to go wrong. It’s constant anxiety. While you are balancing all of this your also feeling guilty because you wish you could still see your seniors up there in the front of your team. It stings your eyes…. Often.

But the thing is these seniors did see it all. They have done more than any average dog on this planet thanks to your program and lifestlyle. And now they just want peaceful evenings on the couch with you. They want the occasional off leash frolic down the trail. They want the occasional paddle in the canoe and swim in the lake. They want to still play with the youngsters a bit and then come get pets and massages and just be with you. They have been through it all with you, and now they just want you there with them at the end of the day. Tail wagging.

They don’t wish for more. They don’t judge you for having more priorities than just them. They don’t feel abandoned. These are all things that we feel in the senior dog emotional roller coaster in this small team lifestyle. These are dogs that have devoted their entire life to be your team mate in so many ways. Now it’s our turn to repay them by giving them an easy retirement and prepare for the ultimate gift that will inevitably come to break our hearts.

If you are living this lifestyle… you deserve so much credit for your absolute commitment, emotional strength, resource management, and empathy. You are not alone.
