A huge thank you to London Community Foundation for continuing to champion community, belonging, and food security in London, and for sharing the story of The PATCH and Root Awakening 🌱💛

The PATCH has grown into so much more than a garden. It’s a place where people come together, build skills, grow food, share knowledge, and most importantly, feel a sense of belonging. None of it would be possible without the volunteers, participants, partners, and community members who bring this space to life.

We’re incredibly grateful to London Community Foundation for believing in this work and supporting the Cavendish Community Food Hub from its early days.

Their latest story highlights the journey of The PATCH and Root Awakening, our documentary told through the perspective of our very own Faye Simmons.

Perpetually in awe of our community and all they bring 💫

This space wouldn’t be the same without the people who nurture it. Feeling extra grateful for every helping hand, big or small, and so lucky we get to do what we do together 🌱💛

Friday in August at the Cavendish Community Food Hub!

It was a busy one in the garden today. We harvested tomatoes, peppers, onions, okra, beans, squash and cucumbers, while also planting more lettuce, turnips and radishes.

There was plenty of weeding and watering, all part of growing the bounty that makes its way to our free community markets.

Our next market is one week today...

Friday, August 21st, from noon to 1 PM.

Come by, say hello, and take home some fresh, locally grown food.

“The Summer Day”

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean...
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

The Patch was honoured to spend the day with the Indigenous Fellowship of Hamilton Road!

A huge thank you to the Indigenous Fellowship of Hamilton Road for welcoming us to their planting event today. Our group had the opportunity to come together, get our hands in the soil, and help restore the land with Indigenous plants in the beautiful South Branch Park along the Antler River.

The Fellowship operates a fantastic medicinal garden, and we were welcomed into this special space with incredible generosity and warmth. We spent the day planting, learning, dancing, eating, laughing, and making new friends.

We learned about the plants, their importance to the environment, and their significance to Indigenous communities. It was a powerful reminder that caring for the land can also be about caring for one another, sharing knowledge, and building relationships.

Thank you for welcoming The Patch into your community and giving us the opportunity to learn, contribute, and celebrate alongside you.

We’re grateful for the invitation and look forward to continuing to grow these connections.
