🐴 Just because your horse is retired… doesn’t mean they should stop moving.

In fact, movement is the key to long-term health — especially as horses age. 💪

Older horses need:
✔️ Gentle, consistent movement to maintain joint & muscle function
✔️ Mental stimulation to stay engaged and content
✔️ High-quality, easily digestible feed — especially protein
✔️ Creative challenges like hills, logs, or even hanging herbs to stretch and strengthen the body

Remember: “Use it or lose it” isn’t just for people — it’s especially true for our aging horses. ❤️

🌿✨ Natural horse keeping is a beautiful goal — but are you watching your horse closely enough?

Not every horse thrives on 24/7 turnout. Not every horse does well barefoot. Not every horse wants to live like a wild mustang. 🐎

👉 That’s why true natural care starts with observation — not assumptions.

In this blog, we explore:
✅ How to feed forage that encourages natural behavior
✅ Why low-quality hay might be the right choice
✅ The importance of social contact (yes, your horse needs a bestie!)
✅ How to rotate herbs and keep feed low in sugar + starch
✅ And why YOUR horse’s individual needs come first.

Every horse deserves a life that supports their instincts, biology, and unique temperament. 💛

🐴 Is your horse stamping, biting at their legs, or dealing with stubborn scabs that just won’t heal?
It could be mites—and the sooner you treat, the better! 💥

🪳 Mites aren’t just a problem for feathered breeds—any horse can be affected, even if you don’t see them. These pests are invisible to the eye and notoriously hard to eliminate, especially once they start laying eggs (which can stay dormant for up to 2 years 😱).

✨ What can you do?
✔️ Boost the immune system with nettle tincture
✔️ Disrupt the mite cycle with a daily herbal feed-through supplement
✔️ Soothe the skin externally with a castor oil-based leg soak
✔️ Stay consistent—because nothing kills mite eggs, prevention is everything!

🌿 A natural, long-term approach is best for breaking the cycle and protecting your horse’s health—without compromising their immunity with harsh chemicals.

📌 Don't wait—early intervention is key to stopping mites from spreading.

⚖️ Too skinny? Too chunky? Horses, like people, need help finding their balance.

Whether your horse needs to gain or lose weight, here are key takeaways to support a healthy transition:

🐟 Salmon Oil – Supports digestion, boosts appetite, adds energy, and regulates blood sugar. Great for hard keepers!
🌱 Nettle Extract – Cleanses the blood, supports immunity, and helps overweight horses shed toxins and slim down.
🍏 Triphala – A gentle herbal blend that aids metabolism and balances sugar levels, ideal for horses with insulin resistance.
🥗 Proper Forage & Minerals – High-quality hay, mineral support (especially magnesium and vitamin E), and the right feeding setup make all the difference.
👑 Herd Dynamics Matter – Is your horse low on the pecking order? Make sure they’re getting their fair share.

🧠 Remember: Fluctuations are normal seasonally, but consistent weight loss or gain could signal deeper issues. If in doubt, consult your vet.

🐴 Is your horse eating sand? It might be more than just a bad habit.

Sand colic and diarrhea are common in autumn and winter — but why do horses eat sand in the first place?

Here are 6 possible reasons:
1️⃣ Silicon deficiency
2️⃣ Lack of trace minerals
3️⃣ Boredom
4️⃣ Worms
5️⃣ Not enough roughage
6️⃣ A learned habit

🧬 Silicon plays a vital role in collagen formation — think strong tendons, joints, bones, and connective tissue. But horses can’t absorb it from sand! Instead, try a hydrolyzed liquid silicon supplement for maximum bioavailability.

🌊 If your horse is licking earth or sand obsessively, consider a mineral-rich sea concentrate — it delivers 85+ trace elements and fulvic acid for whole-body support.

🔍 Do you know what’s normal for your horse?

Your horse can't tell you when something feels off — but their body can. That’s why it’s essential to know their basic values, like:

🌡️ Resting temperature
💓 Heart rate (25–40 bpm at rest)
🌬️ Respiratory rate (8–14 breaths/min)
💩 F***s & urine appearance
👃 Nasal discharge (yellow/green = 🚨)
👄 Mucous membrane color
💧 Skin elasticity (turgor = hydration check)
💪 Tendon/muscle feel
📱 Pain face cues (tip: try the EPWA App)

🧾 Track these regularly — seasonally or monthly — and keep a simple log in your tack room or phone. If something suddenly changes, you’ll know what’s not normal and can act fast.

Trust your instincts. The better you know your horse’s baseline, the sooner you’ll spot trouble. 🐴💛

🤯 Feeling overwhelmed by all the powders, tinctures, and pellets in your feed room?

You’re not alone — many horse owners wonder if they’re giving too many supplements. The truth is: even natural products can cause stress on the body when overused or improperly combined.

🌿 HELTIE Horse®’s top advice?
✅ Stick to a maximum of 4 supplements at a time
✅ Cycle off herbal products every 6–8 weeks
✅ Always start with forage, then build from there
✅ Use supplements for a reason — and stop when they’re no longer needed
✅ Choose longer-term support (like clove or silicon) only when appropriate

🔍 Less can be more. Targeted, purposeful supplementation = better results + a healthier horse 🐎

💧 Did you know your horse’s feathers work like nature’s raincoat?

Those long leg hairs aren’t just for looks — they actively channel water away from the skin, keeping the legs dry and protected from mud, rain, and cold. 🌧️

👉 Feathers:
✔️ Help prevent wet skin & mud buildup
✔️ Offer a natural barrier to dirt and irritation
✔️ Act as shock absorbers for light brushing

BUT — they need regular checks! 🕵️‍♀️
⚠️ Skin issues like mites or scratches can hide under those lush locks. If feathers stay wet too long or if problems arise, it may be wise to trim for healing.

Let your horse’s feathers do their job — but keep a close eye underneath! 👀

Should every horse go without a rug in winter? ❄️ Not necessarily.

We’re not anti-blankets — because not every horse is the same. Some grow thick coats and thrive in the cold. Others? Not so much.

🧥 A few reasons to consider rugging your horse:

✔️ They don’t grow much of a winter coat
✔️ They’re older, recovering, or have low immunity
✔️ They hate rain + wind (and get stiff or sulky)
✔️ They’re shaved for training reasons
✔️ They're overweight but still cold due to low forage

At the end of the day, you know your horse best. If they’re happier, more mobile, and healthier with a rug — then that’s the right choice 💛

👀 Read the full article at the link in bio for all 7 reasons why rugs might be just what your horse needs this winter.
