What a week... it began with the joy and excitement of Nellie having 7(!) beautiful kittens. This was her first litter and we were surprised when she gave birth to 7 kittens- large and healthy.
Our joy quickly turned to concern for Nellie as she began to hyperventilate and lay on the floor away from her kittens. Even hours after the last kitten was born she was expelling blood and other fluids from her body. She would not eat or drink. She didn't improve after a few hours and we called our local vet to see if they could take her in.
Long story short Nel was carrying an 8th kitten that was breached and causing her immense discomfort and she was losing a lot of blood. The vet was able to deliver the kitten (who had sadly passed) and in the end we opted for emergency spay in attempt to stop the blood-loss and hopefully save Nel’s life.
We were so relieved to get the news that the surgery had gone very well, and Nel was no longer losing blood. Last night we were able to bring her home and she immediately made a bee-line for her kittens. They were overjoyed to see her and her to see them.
While she was away we were on ( and will continue to be on) a strict feeding schedule for the kittens. We will balance Nel's time spent with them and away from them to make sure she has energy to recover, and we will continue to make sure the kittens are getting the food and cleaning they need. Our hearts were warmed to see Estella step in and clean and even feed the kittens a few times while Nel was away.
It’s been an incredibly emotional and tiring week but we are very thankful to see our Nel home, and our kittens doing well. Family has been there with meals, good friends like Norine and Steve from@caspian_siberians have been incredibly supportive and generous. Dr. Hardy and the staff at were incredible for us and Nel. We are so thankful for how we have been provided for throughout this experience and are excited to keep focusing on our little kitties as they grow up 😊
Stay tuned for a lot of kitten content!
