Gilbert is doing much better now. He gets excited when he gets superworms, and tries to catch them, but still needs assistance. He still doesn't recognize greens as food until they are actually in his mouth, and will not open his mouth on his own to eat them. So we either sneak them in while he is eating a worm, or we open his mouth and put them in.

Gil shows signs of what is referred to as Muscular Dystrophy in Bearded Dragons. He can move around his tank on his own, but tends to flip over easily, and can't always right himself. As Bearded Dragons can't breathe well on their backs, this can be life-threatening. So he is kept in an enclosure with very little "furniture" to minimize the risk.

I have included a graphic that compares MD to MBD. Gil checks all the boxes for MD.

As he will require special care for the rest of his life, he will be a Permanent Resident of Boberta's. Which means he gets a new name, after a Star Trek actor.

We had been playing around with a few, but hadn't made a decision until today, when Bob's Alexa informed her that it was Wil Wheaton's birthday, so we had to "make it so".

Introducing Gil Gheaton.

Ball Pythons are a great first snake. They aren't that difficult to care for, and are usually docile and non-aggressive. Plus, their heavier body type gives them the appearance of a larger snake, while reaching a length of about 5 feet.

Despite this, many municipalities do not allow them to be kept legally. But this isn't common knowledge, and people often get one as a pet, not knowing that they are not allowed.

Unfortunately, this is the case with our latest intake, Zorro.

Zorro is a gorgeous Pastel BP, who was surrendered to us after his owner was given the choice of rehome, or euthanize.

He will not be available for adoption as of yet. His owner is hoping to find a way to be able to legally be able to take him back.

Unfortunately, the laws around snake keeping in many jurisdictions are made out of fear and ignorance, and not based in fact. We need to keep educating the public on these beautiful creatures that make wonderful pets.
