WINTER SOLSTICE

The symbolic death and rebirth of the sun; the gradual waning of daylight hours is reversed and our daylight hours start to grow again.

It’s easy to feel tired upon winter. Take a break, hibernate inside with your dog more.. this is not a bad thing considering those who train, train hard most of the year. Winter is a time to slow down with your dog, come back down and reflect upon the year you’ve just had together.

On the quietest night of the year i like to take all of this in. I manifest what I want going forward and visualize the steps I need to take with my dog to get there.

Knowing every day ahead of our tiny hibernation together is brighter and we begin to spend more time understanding each other.

Much like the rebirth of the sun comes a rebirth of our relationship together as the daylight lingers allowing us to regrow with our dogs.

The precise instant of the solstice cannot be detected. It is slowly over time that we notice it. This mirrors our relationship with our dogs: we can’t notice the tiny nuances and daily action we take in life along our dogs until later.

Lessons from Winter Solstice:

Rest and regrow; enjoy the calm and quiet with your dog
Give yourselves time to rebuild for a better year ahead and,

Every day with your dog gets brighter from here.

Let’s go back to a parking lot observation session with puppy Seeya 🥹 to remind you that ….✏️ Puppy socializing isn’t solely about a magical checklist of people to meet and dogs to introduce your puppy to. 📝

Socializing your puppy is about confident, safe exposures to all that life has to offer and helping them tackle it with joy, enthusiasm and confidence.

Socializing your puppy is about helping them see dogs, people etc. and making good choices, remaining neutral and comfortable. Forced interactions and overwhelming a puppy forces them to make poor life choices so they can feel safe.

Socialization looks like helping your puppy confidently navigate different floorings & textures under their feet. Socialization looks like taking your puppy into elevators and through automatic sliding doors. Socialization looks like taking your puppy through a car wash 🧽.

Socialization looks like taking your puppy to safely watch,from a comfortable distance, a construction site 🏗. Socialization looks like walking by or sitting & observing a school during daily pickup and watching children.

Socialization looks like learning how to confidently handle grooming, veterinary care, toenail trims, emergency holds etc.

Socialization looks like exposing your puppy to different sounds, different animals (farms, birds, cows, goats etc), and vehicles etc. It can look like taking your puppy for a ride in a wagon, smashing pop cans, playing in a tub of plastic bottles. Socialization can look like helping your puppy realize the puppy in the mirror is just them.

There is SO much more to socializing your puppy than dog parks, doggie day care, meeting 100 people, meeting 50 dogs and finding a human with an umbrella.

Socialization is about helping your puppy see the world through an appropriate, confidence filled lens. It is about helping your puppy learn that they can remain calm, polite and behave appropriately in a variety of situations. Proper socialization helps teach your puppy that you have their back and will protect and advocate for them.

Proper socialization helps your puppy become a well established adult dog. And after all…. That’s what we all want when we set out to socialize our puppies/young dogs.

Prioritize confidence.
Prioritize observations Vs interactions.
Prioritize experiences.

…and remember raising a puppy is hard work. You’re doing great. We all feel overwhelmed at times. You’re doing great.

🐶🐾Let's chat about a nifty little trick in the dog training world that is pure gold - The Premack Principle.🐾🐶

Now, I'm going to break this down without all the jargon: As a kid, were you ever told, "You can't have any dessert until you've finished your vegetables"? It's just like that, but for dogs.

The Premack Principle is all about using something that your dog loves to reinforce something they might not be so crazy about. Using Premack, you can turn less exciting stuff into a gateway to the good stuff!

Need an example? Okay, here's one that we've ALL experienced. The chaotic door scene. You know, the scene where your dog goes full-on rocket mode the second the door opens, desperate to explore the big, wide world outside.

So, let's use the Premack Principle to solve your daily door drama.

Here's the deal: Every time you and your furry sidekick approach the door, rather than the usual doggy stampede, you can ask for a "sit" or "wait". If they try to do their typical door dash, simply close the door before they make their great escape and try again.

Genius, right? You're using what your dog wants (to go outside) as a reward for what you want (good manners at the door).

Yes, this will take a bit of practice, patience and a few treats along the way, but soon enough, your door rituals will become the epitome of canine etiquette.

The Premack Principle goes so far beyond "dog training"; it's about weaving good behaviour seamlessly into your daily routine.

This is a dog training hack that you can't afford to ignore!

‼️Your dog is highly skilled and unemployed‼️

Dogs have lived alongside humans for 10,000 - 40,000 years and during that time, we have transformed them into highly specialized genetic groups including, herding dogs, guardians, terriers, hunters, trackers etc.

Our dogs are occupational experts who, for the most part, have found themselves unemployed in our modern world.

🐾 Herding dogs without a sheep in sight to herd… But plenty of joggers, strollers and cars to chase!

🐾 Gun dogs with no water fowl to retrieve… But lots of socks, shoes and water bottles to carry around the house!

🐾 Guardian dogs with no livestock to protect… But grandma has been looking awfully suspicious these days.

🐾 Terriers, no longer living in and around businesses, keeping the varmints at bay… But the cat or your neighbour's little dog might look close enough.

🐾 Scent hounds, no longer needed for their voice to let hunters know where the prey is… Well, they may be driving you and your neighbours crazy with all of the "singing" they do on the daily.

As a trainer and family dog mediator, I see a lot of owner's stress over behaviours that are ultimately very normal for our canine companions. "It needs to be fixed!" "It needs to be changed!" "It needs to be 'trained out' of the dog!"

❌️ A lot of people jump to "how?" How do we change the dog? How do we change the behaviour?

We forget to ask, "Why?" Why is the behaviour happening in the first place?

✅️ When we uncover the "why", we can find a solution that makes all parties happy; A solution that restores peace in the home while honouring the dog as an individual, their history and their ancestors.
