Today, our hearts are broken.
A little over a year and a half ago, Rupert arrived in our care alongside his three siblings. They came to us during one of the most difficult periods we had faced, when far too many sick, orphaned kittens were arriving at our doors. From the very beginning, Rupert and his family were fighters.
But heartbreak followed them.
Within days of arriving, we lost two of Rupert’s siblings. Despite every effort, despite every hope, they slipped away before they ever had the chance to truly experience the life they deserved.
Rupert and his sister Reba carried on. They battled through challenge after challenge, and somehow, through all of it, they kept going. Then, just a few months ago, we lost Reba too.
Since then, it has felt as though we’ve been holding our breath.
Every good day gave us hope. Every setback brought fear. We worked tirelessly alongside our veterinary team, trying to keep Rupert comfortable and hoping that somehow, after everything he had endured, his immune system would rally and finally allow him to leave behind the many illnesses and complications that had followed him and his family for so long.
Today, that fight came to an end.
Less than half an hour ago, I went in to spend some time with him. Rupert looked up from his bed, took one last deep breath, and quietly left this world.
There are moments in rescue that never get easier, and this is one of them.
We take comfort in imagining Rupert reunited with the family who left before him. His siblings who were taken far too soon. His beloved sister Reba. We hope they were waiting for him, healthy and whole, on the other side.
And as Rupert says goodbye to this world, Muffin can say her goodbye to him. They spent time together healing, facing many of the same challenges, forming a friendship that only those who have fought so hard can understand.
Rupert’s life was far too short, but it mattered. He was loved every single day he was with us. He knew comfort, friendship, and people who never stopped fighting for him.
Run free, brave little Rupert.
We’re going to miss you more than words can say.
