I'd like to take a moment to address a problem that I've been dealing with recently with the rehoming of Ozzy Osborne.
It doesn't take a genius to see this boy is a gorgeous cat. The lynx tips, the long legs, the sleek black coat, the healthy socialization. He's the whole package.
So why is it, that I've had people back out of adopting him - no, MEETING him - as soon as they find out he's neutered? Simple. Likely to pass those traits on to kittens with a cat who's markings or personality would make them big money with his handsome traits 🚩
I had a great conversation with local TNR ladies recently. The cat epidemic is out of control. As quickly as they are catching and neutering/spaying cats, more are being bred, released unfixed, left behind during a move, or just straight up ignored while they produce litter after litter. And some are just so old and so smart, they have to be left unaltered since no trap can contain them.
The vet we saw the day I met these ladies said "believe it or not, things are getting better." The TNR ladies and I agreed we don't see it. I get flooded with emails, threatening to euthanize or "just let the cat roam" if I don't intervene. And that does not have to be the answer.
But also, purposefully breeding cats is incredibly unnecessary when hundreds if not thousands of cats are sitting in rescues ready to start their indoor lives of stress-free comfort.
People don't like cats because they can be unruly, independent creatures with firm boundaries who can be difficult to control and demand obedience from. Most humans can't accept that of other humans, so why would they try accept that of an animal. I get it.
But what they don't see is the possibility for a companionship you have to work for in a way you wouldn't have to work for anything else. A trust that truly has to be earned and accepted - and is something to brag about. There's a reason the Egyptians raved over cats with so much respect. Having that cat neutered/spayed, makes you even more bad@$$. Because you're caring for generations of cats who would be taking the place of cats who only knew hardship and ignorance. ChinaDoll knows all about it, and since coming here, she has chosen to ignore that part of her life to explore the good in humans.
Ozzy, now neutered, will never know that hardship. Will never father kittens to know that hardship, will be free of pain/illness, and will effortlessly only know the good in humans his mom fought so hard to find.
Both Ozzy and his mom are still available for adoption, but due to more cruelty I was recently made aware of to cats during the Halloween season (especially black cats) they will not be leaving the farm until November if they are chosen by a family.
After these two are adopted, our rescue will no longer be taking cats and will be focusing on livestock and exotics. There are many cat-specific rescues who do a fantastic job who I will happily direct people to if they find a cat in need of help. Don't threaten them with releasing cats, declawing them, or euthanizing them if they direct you to a different organization please. Everyone is doing their best.
