Ladybird Animal Sanctuary

Ladybird Animal Sanctuary Ladybird Animal Sanctuary is a Canadian animal rescue charity dedicated to saving the lives of cats, dogs and small animals from high-volume shelters.

Registered Canadian Charity: 815911318RR0001 We are the Ladybirds - Melissa McClelland, Lisa Winn and Janine Stoll; best friends and musicians who have spent over a decade sharing in each other’s music. Through recording as the Ladybird Sideshow Project, touring Canada or simply singing three part harmonies in each other’s living rooms over a bottle of wine, our collective passion for music has a

lways been the glue to our friendship. As our music careers veered in different directions over the years, our friendship held strong and our shared passion for animal welfare eventually helped us conceive of Ladybird Animal Sanctuary, bonding the three of us even closer. It all started with a cat named Oliver who had been abandoned at a local shelter where Ladybird Lisa was working at the time. After spending a year in a cage, and some time not being able to shake what seemed like a cold, he was diagnosed with feline leukemia. In some shelters, this is a death sentence, even though FeLV cats can live long, healthy lives, despite the diagnosis. Oliver was snuggly, affectionate, full of life and certainly not deserving of death just because of his diagnoses. Lisa brought him home and spent months trying to find him a suitable home, as she already had her share of rescue animals. It was sweet Oliver who sparked our idea for Ladybird Animal Sanctuary. With one foster home, one rescue cat, a website design from our extraordinary web genius Janine and some serious word of mouth, we watched Ladybird grow from one simple idea to a registered Canadian charity with a system of 30 plus volunteer foster homes, and hundreds of domestic animals rescued from high-kill shelters. Each animal eventually adopted out to a loving forever home, or becoming “Permanent Resident” when they are not suitable for adoption. We are working hard towards our dream of opening a physical sanctuary in the Southern Ontario region. This will be a safe haven for animals, where we can continue to rescue dogs, cats, small animals and birds, and where we can also take in farm animals. This will also be a place for our Ladybird community to gather and grow. We will welcome anyone who is willing to help, learn, engage and celebrate the lives of these wonderful creatures. There are steep learning curves at every turn, but we are up for the challenge because there is an important task at hand. With every success story, every rescue mission, every grateful furry little face, we know we are doing our jobs as animal defenders. We could not, and cannot possibly do this alone, so please join us on our Ladybird journey!

Princess Donut had a big day yesterday! She saw the vet and had an exam and blood work done. It was discovered that she has a pretty severe ear infection, so her ears were flushed and she was started on medication. She’s not spayed, so that surgery is scheduled for next month. She seems fairly heathy otherwise, but we’ll know more when her blood results come back.

After the vet, Princess Donut was off to the groomer! Big thank you to Blue Dog Grooming in St. Catharines for fitting in Princess Donut for an appointment. All those matts and dirty fur are gone. Doesn’t she look fantastic?

Good job, Princess Donut! You’re a superstar!

Available for adoption:

Stanley!

AGE AT ARRIVAL: Approximately 12 years old
ARRIVAL DATE: April 3rd, 2026
GENDER: Neutered Male
LOCATION: Hamilton, Ontario
ADOPTION FEE: $200

Stanley ended up at Hamilton Animal Services after his owner passed away. We were told that Stanley had spent a significant amount of time alone in the home before anyone discovered that his owner had passed.
Not surprisingly, Stanley was very scared at the shelter. We were happy to get him out when a foster home opened up.
Shockingly, Stanley’s foster mom discovered bits of plastic in Stanley’s p**p. Turns out, Stanley’s belly was full of plastic. Because he had no food for so long after his owner passed away, it’s likely he was forced to eat whatever he could find to stay alive until he was discovered.

After the plastic was gone we got Stanley the dental surgery he needed, and he’s feeling much better. He even started to come out of hiding for pets and cuddles! He’s now ready for his forever home!

Here’s a note from his foster mom:
“After the trauma of losing his family and ending up at a shelter, Stanley was, very understandably, terrified and his we gave him space and time to get comfortable. It took about a month for Stanley to eat when a person was close by, and another few weeks to accept pets.
He is only getting braver each day!
He will still sleep upstairs in his safe space, but he comes down at breakfast for some skritches and brushes. He also is starting to play with toys, which is amazing.
He will come down at dinner for more skritches and does some exploring before eating and then going back to sleep
We’d like Stanley to find his forever home – ideally sooner rather than later so he doesn’t get retraumatized too badly when he moves to his new place.
His new family will have to be very patient.
It is also best to keep a constant supply of food out – he doesn’t eat a lot, but you can tell he gets anxious when there is no food available.
A quiet home with no kids, and no other pets is what Stanley is looking for, as he needs space to feel safe and comfortable.”

Stanley ended up at Hamilton Animal Services after his owner passed away. The shelter let us know that Stanley had spent a significant amount of time alone in the home before anyone discovered that his owner had passed. Must have been so terrifying for this poor cat.
Not surprisingly, Stanley was very scared at the shelter. We were happy to get him out when a foster home opened up. For the first few weeks, Stanley was just as frightened at his foster home. He wouldn’t come out of hiding, other than to eat and use the litter box when his foster mom wasn’t around. Shockingly, Stanley’s foster mom discovered bits of plastic in Stanley’s p**p. At his vet visit, it was discovered that his belly was full of plastic. Because he had no food for so long after his owner passed away, it’s likely he was forced to eat whatever he could find to stay alive until he was discovered. It took about two weeks to get rid of the plastic, with the help of high protein food and an appetite stimulant.
He had blood work and f***l testing done at the vet, and thankfully those results showed that he didn’t have any medical complications from having to fend for himself after his owner passed.

After the plastic was gone, Stanley started eating regularly and well. We got him the dental surgery he needed, and he’s feeling much better after having all the broken and rotten teeth removed. He even started to come out of hiding for pets and cuddles! He’s all healed up from surgery now, and he’s ready for his forever home!

He loves the wand toy and the other morning he actually jumped for the feathers!
He will also come down at dinner for more skritches and does some exploring before eating and then going back to sleep (sounds like a great life!)
We’d like Stanley to find his forever home – ideally sooner rather than later so he doesn’t get retraumatized too badly when he moves to his new place.
His new family will have to be patient. Stanley was so scared and it took him a long time to trust that his foster family wasn’t going to hurt him.
It is also best to keep a constant supply of food out – he doesn’t eat a lot, but you can tell he gets anxious when there is no food available. Cats remember traumatic experiences for the rest of their lives, and this poor guy has been through a lot.
A quiet home with no kids, and no other pets is what Stanley is looking for, as he needs space to feel safe and comfortable.
Please give this handsome boy a forever home!”

Adorable dog rescue!

Princess Donut came to Hamilton Animal Services as a stray and was not claimed. When she first arrived, Princess Donut was severely matted and uncomfortable, but with patience and gentle handling, shelter staff were able to carefully remove the largest mats to help her start to feel better. Princess Donut was quite shy at the shelter, which is understandable for a little dog like her.
We were happy to get Princess Donut out of the shelter and into a foster home. She’s already coming out of her shell with her foster family, and we know she’ll continue to thrive. She’s got a vet visit coming up where we can get more insight into her health needs. She’ll also see a groomer to help her look and feel better without all that matted fur. Nothing but better things ahead for this adorable girl.

Welcome to Ladybird, Princess Donut! We’re so happy you’re here!

Spark update!

Spark had a vet appointment last week, and she’s doing great! She got her first set of vaccines and her mouth and tongue are healing up very well.
She has an appointment next month for her second set of vaccines, and if all is well, she’ll be made available for adoption soon after.
(When she is approximately 16 weeks old, Spark’s adopters will need to take her to a pre-booked spay appointment at her current vet, West Park Animal Hospital in Hamilton)

Go, Spark! You’re a superstar!
