Did you know that rolling a D20 could be one of the best things you do for your mental health? 🎲🐉Here at the clinic, we're harnessing the power of collaborative storytelling and heroic fantasy through a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) campaign for adults every other Friday night! How does D&D contribute to mental health wellness? We are glad you asked!
▪Improving on Social Skills in a Safe Space: D&D is inherently a social game. It gives players a low-stakes environment to practice essential social skills like communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution. It can be incredibly helpful for those struggling with social anxiety or difficulty making connections.
▪Boosted Self-Confidence: Creating and embodying a character who overcomes challenges can be deeply empowering. When your character succeeds, you succeed. This can translate to a powerful boost in self-esteem and self-efficacy (the belief in your ability to succeed).
▪Emotional Expression and Exploration: Roleplaying allows you to explore difficult emotions, decisions, and scenarios from a safe distance. Want to see what it feels like to be decisive, assertive, or vulnerable? Your character is the perfect proxy for emotional exploration and understanding your own reactions.
▪Tackling Anxiety and Depression: D&D encourages mindfulness and focus on the current moment—the adventure at hand. The structure and collaborative nature of the game offer a distraction from ruminative thoughts, and the social connection can combat feelings of isolation that often accompany depression.
▪Creative Problem Solving: Every session throws new problems at the group, demanding creative thinking and collaboration. This practice in flexible thinking can improve your ability to approach real-life challenges with a more adaptable and resourceful mindset.
Ready to Join the Quest? You don't need any prior experience or equipment—just a willingness to embark on an adventure and we will help with the rest!
