Halloween can be exciting but also stressful (and even dangerous) for small dogs like dachshunds. ๐๐พ
Here are Halloween week safety tips and fun suggestions tailored for dachshund owners:
๐ Safety Tips
1. Costume Comfort & Fit
Keep it lightweight: Dachshunds have long backs and can overheat easily. Avoid heavy or tight costumes that restrict movement or cause back strain.
Test beforehand: Let your dog wear the costume for short periods before Halloween to make sure theyโre comfortable.
Avoid small parts: Steer clear of buttons, beads, or anything they could chew off and swallow.
2. Candy Caution
No chocolate or xylitol! These are toxic to dogs. Remind guests and kids not to share candy.
Secure the stash: Keep candy bowls and trick-or-treat bags well out of reach โ dachshunds are sneaky snackers.
3. Trick-or-Treat Safety
Noise control: Doorbells, costumes, and shouting can stress dogs. Consider keeping your dachshund in a quiet room with calming music.
Secure the escape artist: Dachshunds are diggers and bolters. Make sure doors, fences, and leashes are secure when the door is frequently opening.
ID tags & microchip: Ensure your dogโs tags are updated, just in case.
4. Decorations & Hazards
Watch candles & cords: Keep lit pumpkins, extension cords, and battery-powered decorations out of reach.
No glow sticks: The liquid isnโt deadly but tastes awful and can make dogs drool and vomit.
Fake cobwebs: Avoid using them near your dogโs play area as they can tangle or be ingested.
5. Walk Safety
Go early: Take your walk before dark or before trick-or-treaters hit the streets.
Reflective gear: A reflective leash, harness, or LED collar makes your dachshund visible.
Avoid costumes with trailing parts: They could trip your pup or drag on the ground.
