What are ticks?
They’re arachnids, relatives of spiders, mites and scorpions, that feed on blood of animals and humans. Ticks come in different sizes and make their way by crawling (not by jumping or flying).
In Canada, there are over 40 species of ticks but the most common is the deer/blacklegged tick and the American dog /wood tick. The deer/blacklegged tick can transmit Lyme disease.
These pests can be found in many areas across Canada, but they prefer to live in wooded areas, in tall grasses, and under leaf litter. They can also be found in urban areas, like city parks and green spaces.
Give us a call to discuss tick control options for your pet.

Visit the link below to learn more about the signs of heat stroke and how it can be prevented ☀️Stay cool out there!

With the province experiencing a heat wave this week, remember to keep your pet safe. Pets have a limited capacity to deal with the heat, and they can quickly become overwhelmed, leading to heat stroke (learn more about the signs and symptoms at www.ovma.org/petcare/pet-safety-tips). If you see an animal left in a hot car in distress, call 911.

As the presence of coyotes and foxes continue to increase throughout the urban and residential areas, so does the prevalence of the parasites they carry, including the zoonotic tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. This means more domestic dogs are now at risk — along with their owners.
Dogs can become infected with this parasite by eating infected rodents. Humans become infected through the accidental ingestion of E. multilocularis eggs, causing serious internal damage and possible death.
E.multilocularis is treated with praziquantel, the same pet medication that is used to treat other tapeworm species. This medication can be given to your dog by mouth or as an injection.
If you have questions about E.multilocularis or general parasite prevention, give us a call at 519 766 9494

Lyme disease is a serious tick-borne illness that can cause ongoing health issues in animals, including swollen joints, lameness and muscle pain. In serious cases, it can also lead to kidney failure. To protect your pet, speak to your veterinarian about parasite prevention.

What is Echinococcus multilocularis?
It’s a tapeworm that is typically found in wild animals, including coyotes, rodents, and foxes that can easily infect dogs and humans, leading to severe illness and/or death.
With a widespread of EM in southern Ontario, it’s important to keep your dog healthy and protected.

How can you protect your pet?
💚Praziquantel is a monthly oral treatment to control infections.
💚 Keep an eye on your pet while they’re outside to help prevent them eating rodents, fox, and coyote droppings.
💚 Dog owners should also wash their hands regularly, especially after handling p**p and petting their fur.
