šŸ•·ļø Quality control isn’t optional here.

This is Shelob —
one of our in-house product testing team

And since this lady just molted…
we had to show her off looking fresh šŸ˜

If feeders don’t perform…
she lets us know.
Fast.

That’s why we only offer
strong, healthy, proven colonies.

Because if it doesn’t meet our standards—
it doesn’t go out.

A side by side look at nymphs of both purebred varieties of discoid roaches raised at the Ontario Invert Farm: Banana Bay and Redlands.

Can you see any difference?

Had some hermit flower beetles (Osmoderma) merge early from pupation.

In the wild these beetles feed on sap flows but in captivity can be fed bananas, apple, and other fruits as adults. Their grubs grow in decaying wood and are easily reared on flake soil.

This video chronicles the next step in the Mulberry Adventures: sifting!

Once you've ground down your dried mulberry leaves, it is important that you sift it through a strainer to remove most of the twigs and sticks present. Small amounts of petiole (leaf stem) are tolerable and act as a source of necessary source of fiber. Too many stems & twigs means your silkworms are unable to eat or digest the diet.

A look at some Banana Bay Discoids feeding on pieces of clementine. It is important to provide a quality diet to your feeders and roaches are no different.

Ideally a good diet for these roaches comprises predominantly of produce. The list of accepted food items is long; apple, melons, citrus, berries, dark leafy greens, peppers, cucumber, carrots, and much more. Just remember to only offer as much as the colony can consume in a reasonable space of time and remove excess before it molds!

The OIF has narrowed focus when it comes to the isopods we offer: rather than maintain an expansive collection of dozens of species, we have chosen a handful which work best across different conditions.

This clip shows one of the Crown Jewels of our collection; Pruinosus 'Party Mix'
Easily our hardiest, most adaptable, and stunningly coloured isopods, they are a superb addition to any bioactive setup.

An update to a project that was put on a brief pause; while going through the 2025 silkworm ova I noted mold on some groups of eggs and set them aside in the Bug Lodge. Dispite the mold and suboptimal conditions, they hatched!

These are eggs from the polymorphic line I had been working with at the end of last summer and you can already see differences between these tiny caterpillars.

Additional eggs are soon to hatch and now comes the "proof of concept" stage with the artificial diet we've been putting together. I will be posting some more details in the coming days, but I wanted to announce the good news for now.

It's that time of year! Mantis ootheca are now available for sale.

Each ooth can contain hundreds of eggs. They are currently in diapause (winter rest) and can be placed in the garden to emerge in the spring or kept indoors to hatch sooner.

It has been some time since we last posted - our deepest apologies to our valued customers and followers for the radio silence! Things are back on track and we want to assure people that not only is the OIF open for business but we are striving to make 2026 our strongest year yet!

Some brief announcements to start the year:
A major issue hit our dermestid colonies starting in November, which unfortunately was when the need for them was high. Our main breeding colony was wiped completely out by cordyceps fungus. The remaining bins were hit hard by a pest not long after which meant until it was cleared, no colonies were sold (revised and improved screening methods have been implemented to provide people with the healthiest starters and colonies possible). Most of the dermestid harvest for the end of 2025 was a failure due to this and we offer our most sincere apologies to customers which were affected by it.
We are working diligently to get our colonies back on track and will be contacting everyone on the waitlist once we have a better idea of the timeline moving forward.

It's the time of year again and mantis ootheca are available for sale! These are great for home garden pest control, can be raised as pets, and some people even use them as feeders! Send a PM for pricing and details.

Finally, all springtails now sold by the OIF will be on charcoal. We have some exclusive and rarely offered species that we are also working to bring on alongside the already tremendous lineup offered. Will 2026 be year of the springtail part II electric boogaloo? Only time will tell!

We hope that everyone's new year is off to a strong start, and that you all have a prosperous, healthy, and happy 2026 ahead. Sorry again to anyone waiting for a response to messages sent in the final two months of last year. We cannot express the depth of our gratitude for the patience, support, and understanding of our followers and patrons - thank you!
