Dog - friendly Nordic trails getting a shout out! Hopefully this will be us too before long💕

“Or, they can grab their gear and head to the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre, which has 52 km of groomed trails, according to the centre’s website. This includes five lit kilometres for night skiing and 11 km of dog-friendly trails.“

Smithers is a historic mountain town in B.C. with world-class skiing, considered "alpine-themed" since the 1970s.

Our goal is to create high-quality, groomed trails—for both skate and classic skiing—where people can learn, train, and enjoy a consistent Nordic experience with their dogs while concentrating the environmental impacts to a smaller footprint.

By establishing designated dog-friendly trails within the existing Dawn Mountain Recreation Site, we can condense recreation to an area that’s already impacted by activity, rather than spreading it out on the landscape into more sensitive or unmanaged areas. This approach helps protect wildlife habitats while offering a safe, well-maintained space for skiers and their pups to enjoy, allowing them to be a part of the awesome Nordic community.

Will There Be Rules for Skiing with Dogs? 🐾

Yes! To keep the trails safe and enjoyable for everyone, all users will be expected to follow a code of conduct, with guidelines such as:

✅ Leashing dogs in the parking area
🐕‍🦺 Keeping dogs under reliable recall
💩 Cleaning up after your pup

We’ve consulted other dog-friendly Nordic clubs to develop these guidelines, ensuring they reflect best practices. With everyone’s cooperation, we're hopeful the trails can stay safe, clean, and fun for all! 🐾❄️

Where Would the New Dog-Friendly Trails Be? 🐾

Our proposed trails would be located within the Dawn Mountain Recreation Site, offering:

✅ 7 km of dedicated dog-friendly trails – completely separate from the existing network, so skiers preferring dog-free trails wouldn’t be impacted.
🚗 New parking area below the Cedar Lake turnoff on Kicking Horse Trail to reduce congestion and unwanted dog interactions at the main lot.
🔗 Connector trail linking the new dog trails to the main network for more efficient grooming and maintenance.
🏅 Created with the help of a professional trail builder.

We hope to create a space where dogs and their humans can enjoy high-quality Nordic skiing without compromising the experience for others 🐾❄️
