Thank Dog it’s Friday

It’s been a great but long week, and honestly—what better way to end it than puppy cuddles.

Baby Kinetic came in to “support” his big sister Fury for her muscle strain recheck. She got the all clear to start sports again which is also great.

Fury did get slightly offended by the amount of attention her interactive squeaky toy (ahem baby bro) was receiving and felt it was necessary to remind Kirsty that she is, in fact, the best!!

Can anyone guess Kinetic's breed?

While we’re celebrating milestones, another very special boy also had a birthday on May 19th — Chester turned 15 💛🐾

Chester had been coming to see us for over 2 years. He quickly decided that Wow butter lick mats were excellent… although later upgraded his preference to lamb lung. Kirsty's treatments and rules, however, were slightly less appreciated 😅

He always had opinions — especially about how much rehab he felt like doing before relocating himself to a different spot in the room. We saw him every 3–4 weeks for his regular “doodle shenanigans tune-ups,” keeping him comfortable so he could continue living his very best life.

And live it he did — with very strong views on walks and exactly where he was taking his parents (sometimes multiple times a day).

Somewhere along the way, his wonderful humans became my friends. They’re also the faces behind If I Had a Million Collars, and I always looked forward to seeing Chester model each new season. My personal favourite? “Sweet dreams are made of cheese” 🧀

Chester was one of a kind. Full of personality, sass, and charm — and known by so many.

Sadly, just a few days after his birthday, his family had to say goodbye. I don’t often share posts like this, as these moments are deeply personal, but Chester was truly special… and he’ll be missed more than words can say. I know I’ll feel the absence of our monthly 8am Friday mornings for a long time.

Rest easy, sassy old man 🌈🐾
You’ve left a very big hole in a lot of hearts.

Duke came to visit Emily this week — and celebrated his 15th birthday 🥳🐾

Happy Birthday, Duke!

Rehabilitation isn’t just for post-op recovery or injury prevention. Sometimes it’s about keeping our dogs comfortable, mobile, and happy in their golden years.

We see so many senior dogs who genuinely love coming in — a chance to ease those aches and pains, stay strong, and keep doing what they love.

Aging isn’t a disease, but it does change how the body responds. Healing takes longer, muscle is lost more easily (and gained more slowly), and a lifetime of adventures can leave behind a few extra “ouchies.”

Rehab helps balance that — supporting strength, comfort, and mobility so they can enjoy many more happy, tail-wagging years 💛

✨ We’re Growing Again at Fur-Ability! ✨

We couldn’t be more excited to introduce the newest member of our team — Emily Grant!

Some of you may already recognize her from a few years ago when she completed some of her practice hours and hands-on training with us. We’re absolutely thrilled to now welcome her back in an official role!

Emily was born and raised on the North Shore of Nova Scotia, where she developed a deep connection to nature and animals from an early age. She graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, followed by a Certificate in Linguistics in 2013 — before ultimately discovering her passion for Animal Rehabilitation.

She went on to earn her Diploma as a Veterinary Technician in 2017, and most recently achieved her Certified Companion Animal Rehabilitation Therapist (CCAT) designation in 2024.

Emily brings over 4 years of experience in the alternative therapy veterinary world before transitioning into hands-on rehabilitation for small animals. Her knowledge, compassion, and dedication make her an incredible addition to our team.

When she’s not helping your pets feel their best, Emily is out adventuring with her crew — her cats, Simon (black tabby) and Garfunkel (orange tabby), and her Miniature American Shepherd, Bazil. Whether it’s camping, hiking, or even kayaking (yes — the cats come too! 🐾), they’re always on the go… or cozied up for a good snuggle on the couch.

Please join us in giving Emily a warm Fur-Ability welcome!

Last week I was incredibly humbled to open an email and find out I’ve been nominated for Veterinary Professional of the Year in the Trupanion Veterinary Appreciation Day® Awards… which still feels a bit surreal to write, if I’m honest.

Fur Ability is truly a labour of love. I can’t quite believe how much it has grown in just three short years. I love the community that’s been built here, and from the beginning it has always been about the patients first—earning trust (often very slowly and with a lot of snacks), working my way into their inner circle, and helping them feel safe enough to try, move, and heal.

Anyone who’s been here knows it’s not always glamorous. There’s a lot of floor sitting, negotiating with stubborn or scared (but very cute) patients, A LOT of fur, and celebrating the smallest wins like they’re Olympic achievements. You lot are more than clients—you’re friends, and sometimes (as you tell me) I end up being your therapist too. I try to make sure you feel involved every step of the way, helping you understand your pet and be part of their care.

So this nomination really feels like it belongs just as much to the animals who let me in, and the humans who trust me with them.

I’m incredibly grateful to be able to do this work every day—and to be part of such a supportive, slightly chaos-filled, animal-loving community ❤️

The awards are community-driven, which makes this even more meaningful. If you’d like to follow along (or take part and vote), you can do so here:

Sherbet’s here to say…
Happy Mother’s Day 💐
To all the moms—human, dog, cat, horse, and everything in between.
To the ones raising chaos, the ones doing the late nights and early mornings and the ones being followed to the bathroom by at least one very committed creature.
Whether your baby has 2 legs, 4 legs, or even 3… you’re still mom—and you’re doing great ❤️

We are so excited to share some incredible news! 🎉

Erin has officially received confirmation that she has earned her Diploma in Canine Rehabilitation! This is the final recognition of all her hard work, dedication, and passion—and honestly, this just confirms what we’ve known all along: she’s absolutely fabulous (and now has the certificate to prove it!).

Her journey to this achievement has been no small feat. Beginning as a human physiotherapist, Erin transitioned into the animal world through extensive training that included a lot of extra study, online and in-person courses, practical assessments, a comprehensive exam, and a detailed case study.

Over the past 6 months with us, she has been completing the final stages of her case study to achieve this diploma, and we couldn’t be prouder of her commitment and perseverance.

Please join us in congratulating Erin on this amazing accomplishment—we are so lucky to have her on our team and can’t wait to see all the incredible things she continues to achieve! 🐾💙

Congratulations Erin Piercy on successfully fulfilling all requirements to earn your Diploma in Canine Rehabilitation!

Day 2 of the Chronic Pain Symposium 🧠🐾☕

Our team has spent the weekend diving into all things pain — from its effects on behaviour, to the latest advances in management, arthritis care, and the challenges of frailty and aging… and so much in between.

Ongoing learning is so important to us. These events are not only a great refresher, but also an opportunity to stay up to date on new techniques and, just as importantly, to see things from different perspectives from professionals around the world.

While this isn’t a rehab-specific symposium, pain management is at the core of what we do. Supporting comfort, mobility, and quality of life is where we truly thrive — and we’re proud to be part of that journey for our patients.

Stella had her very first rehab session this week 💛

After going missing, Stella was unfortunately likely hit by a car and sustained a significant pelvic and hip fracture. Thanks to the incredible surgical care she received she’s now on the road to recovery—and we’re so happy to be part of her journey.

Our focus in rehab right now is keeping her comfortable and encouraging gentle use of her injured leg. We have a long way to go, but Stella is already showing us just how resilient she is. During her initial assessment, she didn’t seem to mind rehab one bit—in fact, she fell asleep and started snoring during her laser treatment

Even better, she was already walking a little more comfortably by the time she left her session. With the amazing support team behind her, we are hopeful Stella can make a full recovery.

Stay tuned for more updates on this sweet (and very sleepy) English Bulldog 🐾

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and the incredible women who make our little clinic what it is. 💜

Fur Ability Animal Rehabilitation is proudly a small, local, fully female-powered business. Behind every patient we help is a team of dedicated women who care deeply about the animals and families we support.

Our rehab therapists Kirsty and Erin work hands-on with each patient, helping them regain strength, mobility, and confidence. From post-surgical recovery to managing chronic conditions, they bring compassion, knowledge, and a lot of heart to every session. As the owner of Fur Ability, Kirsty has built the clinic from the ground up with the vision of creating a collaborative, compassionate rehabilitation service that supports both patients and the veterinary teams who care for them.

Supporting them behind the scenes is Sabina, our wonderful referral coordinator, who helps keep everything running smoothly and ensures patients and referring vets stay connected throughout their rehabilitation journey.

We’re incredibly proud to be part of a profession where women support women, collaborate, and lift each other up — all while helping animals live happier, more comfortable lives.

Today we celebrate the strength, compassion, and dedication of women everywhere. Happy International Women’s Day! 🌸
