Mini Cucumbers and Long English Cucumbers.

What’s the difference?

Long English Cucumbers are considered the classic Cucumber, whereas Mini Cucumbers look the same as Long English – just in a miniature, snackable form!

The best way to store Cucumbers and keep them fresh is by placing them in your fridge, preferably in a crisper without any other fruits. Although putting them in the fridge will keep your Cucumbers from going bad, it is important to note that the flavor may change.

It is also very important to keep your Cucumbers in their vacuum-sealed plastic wrapping until you are going to eat them. Since Cucumbers are made up of over 90% water, the moisture in a Cucumber needs to be retained to keep it from going limp and rotting.
By keeping the plastic wrapping on your Cucumber, you are helping it retain its water content, and thus are keeping it fresher longer!

Cucumber fruits consist of 95% water. In botanical terms, the cucumber is classified as a pepo, a type of botanical berry with a hard outer rind and no internal divisions. However, much like tomatoes and squashes, it is often perceived, prepared, and eaten as a vegetable.

Considered an annual plant, there are three main varieties of cucumber β€” slicing, pickling, and burpless/seedless β€” within which several cultivars have been created.

The cucumber is a creeping vine that roots in the ground and grows up trellises or other supporting frames, wrapping around supports with thin, spiraling tendrils. The plant may also root in a soilless medium, whereby it will sprawl along the ground in lieu of a supporting structure. The vine has large leaves that form a canopy over the fruits.
The fruit of typical cultivars of cucumber is roughly cylindrical, but elongated with tapered ends, and may be as large as 62 centimeters (24 in) long and 10 centimeters (4 in) in diameter.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ₯’Cucumbers, a lifetime of history.⏳️πŸ₯’

The cucumber originates from South Asia, but now grows on most continents, as many different types of cucumber are traded on the global market. Cultivated for at least 3,000 years, the cucumber originated from India, where a great many varieties have been observed, along with its closest living relative, Cucumis hystrix. It was probably introduced to Europe by the Greeks or Romans. Records of cucumber cultivation appear in France in the 9th century, England in the 14th century, and in North America by the mid-16th century

Charlemagne had cucumbers grown in his gardens in the 8th/9th century. They were reportedly introduced into England in the early 14th century, lost, then reintroduced approximately 250 years later. The Spaniards (through the Italian Christopher Columbus) brought cucumbers to Haiti in 1494. In 1535, Jacques Cartier, a French explorer, found "very great cucumbers" grown on the site of what is now Montreal.

Throughout the 16th century, European trappers, traders, bison hunters, and explorers bartered for the products of American Indian agriculture. The tribes of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains learned from the Spanish how to grow European crops. The farmers on the Great Plains included the Mandan and Abenaki. They obtained cucumbers and watermelons from the Spanish, and added them to the crops they were already growing, including several varieties of corn and beans, pumpkins, squash, and gourd plants. The Iroquois were also growing them when the first Europeans visited them.

Fast forward to modern times.

In 2019, world production of cucumbers and gherkins was 88 million tonnes, led by China with 80% of the total.

Beefsteak varieties have small seed cavities and a preponderance of flesh, making them easy to slice and perfect on sandwiches.

They're also mild in taste and juicy, making them a good choice for canning or sauce making. πŸ…
