It's been awhile since I've posted. I'm sorry. Work is going to be incredibly busy for me this year and I feel perpetually exhausted. For this reason, we've decided not to have a litter this Spring. Luna just went through her heat cycle and since she typically only comes into heat once per year, that means we'll re-evaluate this time next year. With the economic challenges in the world right now and many other breeders struggling to find homes for pups, and my work schedule, it seems like a no-brainer to hold off. Having puppies brings me a lot of joy, but if I can't devote the amount of time to raising puppies that I usually do, then I can't do it. Puppies deserve the best start that I can give them and this year it just isn't possible to raise puppies to our standard. We'll focus on getting Arti's hips/elbows and shoulders OFA cleared later this summer. Picard has been spayed and is back enrolled in agility practice with Shawn. Freya had her 13th birthday and Ember is going strong after her TPLO surgery last summer.
*Enjoy this picture of our new house chicken... 😉 She's been under the weather, and as you can see she is being well watched! Don't worry she's only living in a dog crate while I treat her, once she is feeling better she'll move back out to the coop!

Freya had a dental cleaning a couple of weeks ago and today was Picard's turn. Freya has only ever had 2 dental cleanings, but at 13 years of age she has pearly whites and hasn't had to have any teeth extracted. Today was Picard's first cleaning. She didn't have significant tartar (likely because she eats some T/D dental diet and we use a water additive and we try to give good quality dental treats), but you can see the difference in her before and after photos. Dogs need dental care too. We never give our dogs bones (you work in vet med, you see a lot of broken teeth and dental abscesses caused by chewing bones and antlers). Although I am well aware that many people will say 'I've always given bones and never had a problem...'. I can understand that, but many do have problems. I should brush our guys teeth, but I'll be honest, I don't. There is a lot that you can do at home though. Just be sure that you are using quality products.
I see senior dogs with terrible and painful dental disease every day and it does not need to get to that point! Dental disease can often lead to heart and kidney and other body system diseases as well.
Picard and Freya were both up and at 'em and wanting to play the evening after their dentals. Please keep an eye on your dog's teeth and look after them. If you've had a toothache before you know how relentless that pain is. And yes, if their teeth look terrible it DOES hurt! Evolution has taught animals to hide pain. Can you imagine if a dog is being sad and whiney and mopey and refusing to eat in the wild? How long would they last?
And look at that dental set up! We have a forced warm air bed to keep them toasty warm during their anesthesia, we have iv fluids and a fluid pump, we have an anesthetic machine, a dental machine, and dental instruments for the scaling and polishing of the teeth (including below the gumline), a machine that tracks many different vital signs and x-ray equipment. There's barely enough room for the two Registered Veterinary Technicians to also fit in there too! One of the RVTs monitors anesthesia and charts the teeth, while one scales, and polishes the teeth and does the x-rays. If any teeth need to be extracted, then the doctor comes in for that oral surgery, but otherwise our RVTs mainly run the dental show!
Thanks to my wonderful co-workers, Picard has very fresh breath again! Which if you know Picard, you know that her kisses are plentiful, so fresh breath is a must! ❤️

As I sit in our porch wrapping presents, Shawn is out doing chores. I looked out the window and saw a little Jersey calf just running circles around him and kicking up her heels. I ran for my phone, but missed most of the running, but hopefully you can appreciate the cuteness nonetheless! ❤️❤️❤️

The girls are trying to figure little Mae Mae out. Do they want to herd her? Picard sure does! Or is she jealous that Shawn really likes Mae Mae? Who knows? Mae Mae isn't phased a bit! After Shawn feeds Mae Mae she follows him around while he does the rest of the chores, she even went out into the sheep yard with me. She freaked the sheep right out!

We added a new member to the Borderline crew yesterday. As you can see, Mae Mae is a big hit with the girls!

Forgive the photo dump. These pictures were taken over the last few days. Little Zelda left to her new home yesterday. It's always bittersweet when any pup goes on to their new homes because we truly do love them and enjoy every day that we have with them. That said, having Zelda for 5 months and all of the early days of struggles, really gave this girlie a home in our hearts forever. Saying good bye was so hard. The house is so darned quiet now (and we still have 5 dogs!). She is the sweetest, cuddliest, most empathetic puppy that you could imagine. We had several homes interested in her, but we waited knowing that just the 'right fit' was out there. And we are so happy that we did. Sharon and Bob are wonderful people and Zelda is going to get so many snuggles and so much more one on one time! And the best part, Sharon is committed to doing more puppy classes with the goal of doing in hospital and senior's home visits with Zelda!!! I had previously told Shawn that if she stayed with us, that would have been my goal for her. Border Collies are empathetic and sensitive souls, but Zelda was that way from day one. I've never met a more empathetic little puppy than she has been. She stressed me out early on when I fought to get her to eat. She was healthy, it was her little sister Xena who struggled. And I think that that is exactly why Zelda wasn't always so keen to eat. I think that she was feeling badly for her sister. I know that that sounds 'woo woo', but I do think it's true. She showed me time and time again how aware she was of the emotions and feelings around her. And when we said good bye to little Xena, Zelda instantly became a typical pup with a proper appetite and she hasn't looked back.
Zelda is fun and bouncy, but so darned snuggly and interactive. She's left a hole in our home for sure, but I know that she's bringing so much joy to her new family and I can't wait to see what she and Sharon do in the future. This little girlie isn't just a stunner, she has such potential to spread so much love and joy in a world that needs it and I'm so excited to watch them do just that together!
Zelda Zel, we miss you like crazy and we love you all there is, but we are so happy for you and your new family too!
Welcome to the Borderline Family Sharon and Bob!
