🩵🌿🌎🐟 World Wildlife Day 💙🐟🌿🌎

When we think of wildlife, we often picture animals in jungles, forests or oceans, but wildlife also swim quietly in freshwater streams across Southeast Asia!

DYK ⁉️ Betta fish are wild animals and are classified as, "wild and in captivity." 🤯

Even though they are commonly bred and sold in stores, their species originates in slow-moving, plant-filled waters in the wild. Their instincts, behaviors, and biological needs haven’t disappeared just because they’re kept in aquariums.

Today is a reminder that being in captivity doesn’t make an animal less wild, and it doesn’t lessen our responsibility to care for them ethically. Bettas deserve space to swim, clean heated water, enrichment, and respect...

Not sold in cups 🚫
Not kept in bowls 🚫
Not decor in vases 🚫

I wanted to share a heartfelt thank you for supporting the petition to end the sale of Betta fish in cups across Alberta. Your signatures, shares, and encouragement have made a real difference.

While I haven’t been posting as often on social media, a lot of meaningful work has been happening behind the scenes. Looking back over the year, I’m proud of what we have accomplished together:

• 🐟 10 Betta fish rescued

• ✍️ 1,000 petition signatures reached

• 📘 A FREE Betta care eBook created (available through the link in our Instagram bio) 

• 🌎 A collaboration with Betta World for Bettas (USA) to begin expanding this work into a broader North American initiative

• 📰 A magazine interview discussing ethical Betta care and why Bettas are often misunderstood as “easy” or child-friendly pets

This year, Betta4Betta was able to help:

Elektra, Copper, Binoo, Almass, Slayte, Strawberry, Bahr, Fadot, Zahra, and Burkān - all no longer living in cups, thanks to education, advocacy, and support from people like you.

Every signature helps shift the conversation. Every share helps change a mind. And every small action brings us closer to a future where Betta fish are treated with the care and respect they deserve.

Thinking of adding a new family member this holiday season? ❄️ Remember: pets aren’t Christmas presents & that includes Betta fish! 💙🐟

They aren’t décor or stocking stuffers. Caring for one is a large commitment, despite what chain pet store marketing and other aquarium brands might suggest. Those cute mini “Betta kits” are just clever sales created from pervasive misinformation and the perpetuation of wrong narratives about these creatures, and are not the proper care a Betta will inevitably require.

So this season, choose compassion over impulse.
If you’re truly ready, adopt, don’t shop. 💝🐟🐾🐦 Check out local pet rehoming groups, local aquarium groups and your local rescues!

And if you’re not? Love them enough to leave them out of the holiday rush. 💙🐠✨

Betta care is honestly closer to being a tiny zookeeper than a pet owner (ie. dogs & cats), due to their unique classification & needs! 🐠✨ These little fish come from warm, plant-rich, slow-moving waters in South Asia, environments full of hiding spots, leaf litter, roots, and gentle currents. When we bring them into our homes, the goal isn’t just to keep them alive… it’s to recreate a real habitat that honours where they come from 💙💚💙

A thriving Betta needs more than a cup or a plastic “starter kit,” filled with artificial decor. They need an environment that mirrors the ecosystem they live in naturally:

👉Minimum 5-gallon tank for stable water parameters and the space to actually swim and explore.
👉Live plants to mimic natural cover, reduce stress, improve water quality, and give them a sense of territory.
👉A heater to keep their temperature stable around 24–27°C (75–80°F), because Bettas are tropical fish, not room-temperature décor.
👉A gentle filter to keep the water clean without overwhelming their fins.

When a Betta is given these basics, these REQUIRED essentials, something changes. Their colours deepen. Their confidence grows. Their personality comes out. This is the magic of building a true habitat instead of a display piece ✨💙

This is exactly why cups, tiny tanks, and mini “Betta kits” from brands like Marina and other fish-product companies are WRONG.

Not “controversial.” Not “a matter of opinion.” Just wrong.

Cups are not habitats, not even for a few days or a couple of weeks “while they're being sold.”
Plastic containers, no matter the size, with no heater and no filtration are not habitats.

They are marketing products (ploys), not appropriate living environments, and they directly contradict what Bettas biologically require to survive and thrive.

If caring for a Betta feels like being a little zookeeper managing a micro-ecosystem… good. That’s exactly the mindset these fish deserve. Let’s keep raising the bar, educating others, and pushing back on outdated, harmful standards in the pet industry. 💙🌿🐠

PetSmart. Petland. 👀 Your business model is cruelty disguised as “pet care.”

You profit while Betta fish rot in plastic cups: stewing in ammonia, freezing without heaters, suffocating without filters, and rattled around by kids like toys on a shelf.

When given the chance to do better and partner with rescues like ours, you refused. You chose neglect over compassion. TO DATE, NOT ONE OF NEARLY 20 PET STORES HAS ACCEPTED MY OFFER OF REHABILITATION FOR SHELF-SOUR, DYING BETTAS!

This isn’t oversight. This is abuse for profit. 🛑🐟

We will not stop until this ends.
