🐾 The Day a Little Dog Stood Against Fear — and Paid the Price

In the small town of Manaia, New Zealand, five children were playing when danger came running — two aggressive pit bulls, teeth bared, charging straight for them.

But someone stood between the children and the attack.
George, a brave Jack Russell Terrier, barely knee-high, leapt into the fight.

Outmatched in size, but not in courage, George barked, lunged, and threw himself at the pit bulls — shielding the children with everything he had.

The fight was brutal.
George’s small body was torn and battered beyond saving.
But the children lived — because of him.

His wounds were so severe, the veterinarian had no choice.
George was put to rest — but his courage lived on.

His sacrifice didn’t go unnoticed.
The New Zealand Society for the Protection of Animals awarded him their highest bravery honor.
And across the sea, the PDSA Gold Medal — often called the animal equivalent of the George Cross — was placed in his name.

Today, a statue stands in Manaia.
A quiet monument to a small dog… with a heart bigger than fear itself.

🐕 Because sometimes, heroes walk on four legs — and leave paw prints that never fade.

Please share this post, it explains why hot days can be fatal to dogs!
When you read or hear about the bulldog-type, short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds having more trouble with the heat, you may wonder why. On a good day, with moderate temperatures, they have a much more difficult time moving air to their lungs because of their anatomy.
This picture shows the back of the mouth of a long-nosed dog on the left (a collie-retriever cross) and a short-nosed dog on the right (a pug). You can see that this area is compressed and limited in the pug. Pugs, Bulldogs (all types), Bostons, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Pekingese, etc. all have this anatomy. The space is even more limited when they are overweight or obese.
When it is hot, dogs can only cool themselves by panting. Excessive panting leads to swelling in the back of the mouth and throat. This swelling makes it even more difficult for the brachycephalic breeds to breath and they can suffocate.
In fact, any dog can succumb to heat stroke or compromised breathing so PLEASE DO NOT exercise or leave dogs outside in the sun or in cars when it is hot. They trust us to make good choices and take care of them!

Every year, the days leading up to and following the 4th of July, shelters everywhere fill up with animals frightened by fireworks.

While I honestly wish fireworks were never used, that’s something that will never happen.

Currently, many shelters are at maximum capacity and there’s no room to house anymore animals. While some shelters claim to be “no kill”, don’t be fooled, EVERY shelter has to make difficult decisions.

Please....beginning July 1st, put a phone number on your pet. You don’t have to spend any money. Grab some tape duct tape works great and a sharpie or a ink pen and make the minimal effort to keep your pet from ending up at a shelter.

Even if you think there’s no way they can or will escape your property, just do it.

If you love your pet(s) it’s your job to protect them.

Finding a stray animal with a phone number makes it SO SIMPLE to reunite them with their owner.

Let’s make a difference this holiday and keep animals from ending up at the shelter.

Please spay/neuter your pets.
We are drowning in homeless pets😔
