There's no doubt about it, ticks are out and about this year!
It's so important you check your pet and yourself after you come back indoors. Also, keep an eye on your home after. It's common to find them crawling on your furniture after your dog has laid down!
If your pet isn't already on tick medication, we urge you to pick some up!

It's so fun to be able to bring your four-legged friend out with you- But they should always be your top priority. As you start to hit up patios, make sure your dog always is comfortable and has access to shade and water. The warmer temperatures are exciting for humans, but are a real shock to our pet's systems! Signs of heatstroke include panting, drooling, red gums, disorientation, and collapsing.

Camping season has begun! Here are a few tips to make sure everyone enjoys your outdoorsy getaways:
- Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date
- Ensure that your pet is microchipped in case they venture off on their own and get lost
- Provide plenty of shade and water. Your pet most likely isn’t used to spending all day outside in these temperatures yet
- Never leave your pet unattended in a hot tent or car
- Always check for ticks
- Don't allow your pet to drink from ponds or puddles that may contain dangerous bacteria
- Resist the urge to give your dog all of the leftovers from the BBQ! High-fat foods are linked to Pancreatitis

Being outdoors with your pets is so fun, but we want to ensure everyone is safe. There is an emerging, bacterial disease called Leptospirosis that can be fatal. Previously only seen at the coast, now there has been cases in the Interior. Dogs become infected by drinking contaminated water.
The good news? There is a safe and effective vaccine! If you go camping or hiking (especially to the Coast or the Kootenays) with your dog, we highly recommend getting your dog vaccinated! Give us a call to book your appointment.

If you have a pet that's prone to nibbling on everything within reach, make sure you take note of toxic plants before you head to the garden centre! Some common toxic plants are Lilies, Tulips, Cyclamen, and Kalanchoe. A quick google while shopping can be helpful if you have a curious pet.

The sun is shining and everyone is going outside and getting their yards ready. A friendly reminder that fertilizer can be harmful to pets, especially if ingested or if it comes into contact with their skin! The most dangerous time for pets to be exposed to fertilizer is during and immediately after application. Keep pets off the lawn for at least 24-72 hours after applying fertilizer to ensure their safety!

When we get our first spikes of heat, it's the hardest for our pets! Did you know it takes 60 days for a dog to fully acclimatize to temperatures? At this time of year we typically see many heat stroke cases! Please keep an eye out for signs that your pet is feeling uncomfortable.

It's common to hear that bathing your pet too often is bad for their skin, but did you know we actually recommend it for some pets? Especially at this time of year if your pet has environmental allergies! Getting the pollen off of them can make a world of a difference in their comfort and help them from feeling itchy. If you're unsure of what products to use- give us a call!

Raw food has been the subject of many studies at various universities. Nutritionists conducting these studies failed to find any benefit to feeding raw, and found there are actually some dangers associated with it. The most common danger is the ingestion of pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. While these may not make all dogs sick, they can pass on to you when you get a big sloppy kiss from your furry friend!
