A wonderful day at Friday at Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic High School Edible Garden installation.

Planted: Swiss chard, spinach, lettuce, radishes, and bok choy.

Students painted plaques are colourful and message filled.

The gardens are a showpiece and invitation for people to come see how easy it can be to grow some of your own food.

We have stress, cool weather crop seedlings. If you are interested, private message me to arrange for pick up.

We have Swiss chard, lettuce, bok choy, bush beans

If you plant them now you’ll have a nice harvest this fall. Please note that the larger Swiss chard plant with the red stocks is one from my garden, but that’s what the seedlings are that I have.

Allan’s Place in Cannington is one of larger We Grow Food Edible Garden installations.

It has a greenhouse with 7 beds, 15 raised garden beds, a large in ground bed, fruit trees and berry bushes.

Then there is Doug and Ron. The two of them spend their days in the garden having a great old time. The garden is impeccable.

My favourite part is that there’s no shortage of updates from these two! I can feel their pride every time they text me more pictures

was at Father Fenton Catholic school this week in Pickering. One of the four schools we are planting today.

We Grow Food provided garlic to over 50 locations this past fall and they are growing beautifully.

We Grow Food has been hauling and dumping buckets of compost into all of the vegetable gardens to ensure the richest soil possible.

I love that the school has sour cherry bushes and a huge crop of raspberries coming along.

What a gift for the students and their families

Excited to say that there is so much lettuce that has come up from the lettuce that seeded itself in the fall.

We also have enough tomato plants to plant the garden again from seeds that fell from a fallen tomato

You will also notice that often we share our garden with other members of the natural world face here a couple of peanuts were found that a squirrel put away for the winter and lost track of…… Unless he’s watching me right now waiting for us to leave

These edible gardens are such an important part of all of the school communities. Even as I am setting up people stop by and visit and share what they grow at home and how excited they are to see this garden thrive

at school. Students had a chance to experience harvesting garlic scapes from the garlic that was planted in the fall.

We talked about the benefit of harvesting the garlic escapes, leaving the plants energy to go to the garlic bulb below, but we also shared recipes on how we could use garlic escapes in our next meals.

Students for eager to share the Bounty and promised to send pictures and recipes to We Grow Food

What an amazing group of students at .ddsb ! The knowledge they shared from our garden mapping workshop certainly helped when planting the beds today.

Then, calculating the amount of food that can be grown in the edible garden beds and the cost of growing your own as compared to a grocery store, reinforced the value of growing some of our own food.
