North of Smokey Fishermen's Association The North of Smokey Fishermen's Association (NOSFA) is a registered, incorporated society representing fishermen in both the Gulf and Scotia Fundy.

The North of Smokey Fishermen's Association (NOSFA) is a registered, incorporated society under the Registry of Joint Stock Companies in Nova Scotia. We have a duly elected Board of Directors with representation from the various harbours along our coastline. The NOSFA is also a provincially accredited organization that has been representing < 45ft competitive, multispecies fish harvesters in both

the Scotia-Fundy (Cape Breton) and Gulf regions of Nova Scotia since 1993. Our organization is unique in that it is the only organization in Cape Breton that represents fish harvesters interests in both the Gulf and Scotia-Fundy regions. Our multi-region representation is reflective of the fact that all of our members are licensed to fish either in the Gulf or Scotia-Fundy areas and regularly carry out their harvesting activities in both regions. Our members hold a variety of licenses including, snow crab, lobster, groundfish, tuna, mackerel, herring, swordfish, etc.

The Gulf Nova Scotia Halibut Third Summer Fishery opening is delayed due to poor forecasted weather conditions later this week.



The forecast will be monitored for a possible opening during the week of August 4th.

The DFO has asked associations if they support an earlier opening for LFA 27 starting in 2026.

DFO if proposing the earlier start as a pilot project for all 7 Eastern NS LFA's.

In order to represent your feedback we advised DFO we would poll all members prior to responding.

Good Afternoon,



I am writing to provide an update on the June 15th–16th halibut opening.



Preliminary reports are showing approximately 43 t or 50% of the GNS Spring halibut allocation was landed during the June 15-16 opening.



The remaining Spring allocation will be made available in an opening sometime in spring of 2026, before May 15th.



The first GNS Summer halibut opening is scheduled from 05:00 hrs Wednesday, July 2nd to 20:00 hrs Friday, July 4th.



Pending the forecast closer to the opening, we will advise when a Variation Order has been requested to open the fishery.

A Variation Order has been requested to open the GNS Spring Halibut fishery from 05:00 on Sunday, June 15 until 12:00 (noon) on Monday, June 16.

We will not be requesting a Variation Order to open the halibut fishery June 12, 2025 due to an unfavourable weather forecast. We will continue to monitor the marine weather forecast and schedule an opening upon a favourable weather forecast. We will provide an update by e-mail once opening date has been finalized.

The Gulf Nova Scotia Halibut Spring Fishery is scheduled to be open from 05:00 hrs, June 12th, 2025 to 12:00 hrs, June 13th, 2025.

ATTENTION ALL LFA 27 LICENCE HOLDERS, REPRESENTATIVES and AFFILIATES



After a weather update from ECCC this morning at the LFA 27 pre-season weather call, and some discussion, it was decided that the best day for all of LFA 27 to start is FRIDAY, MAY 16th.



Therefore, LFA 27 will start on FRIDAY, MAY 16th @ 0500hr. The season will end on JULY 16th, 2025. You do not need to request new conditions.
