It starts with a bark.
Sharp. Alert.
“I hear something.”
Your dog’s nervous system activates; scanning, assessing, preparing.
But instead of spiraling…
they check in with you.
And that’s where everything shifts.
You pause → they pause.
You move away → they create distance, but stay engaged.
You move forward → they gather confidence and re-approach.
This isn’t obedience.
This is information-sharing.
Then, a full body shake.
A reset.
Stress moves through the body instead of getting stuck.
And then your voice enters the picture.
The change is immediate.
The body softens.
The tail lifts.
The nose drops.
We move from:
“Something’s wrong.”
to
“Let’s figure this out.”
That’s co-regulation.
Your dog is borrowing your nervous system
to decide how they should feel in that moment.
And then you crouch.
They come in close.
Positioning themselves right in front of you.
Not to retreat.
Not to take over.
But to stay connected while engaging with the world.
This is what Rewilding the Dog looks like.
Not suppressing instinct but guiding it.
Not shutting down the bark but answering it.
Because your dog isn’t just reacting to the environment…
They’re experiencing it with you. 🖤
