POV: Clients trying to explain their dog's behaviour to me.

The story starts with leash pulling, somehow turns into an incident from 2022, includes a detailed explanation of what the neighbour's dog did last Tuesday, and ends with "I swear he's actually a really good dog."

And I believe you!

You don't have to convince me that your dog is a good dog. You don't have to justify every behaviour, apologize for the chaos, or worry that I'm secretly judging your training skills. The reality is is that we all start somewhere and no dog or owner is perfect. The important part is that you reached out for help!

I've heard the embarrassing stories, the questionable decisions, the "I know I probably shouldn't have done that" confessions, and the classic "he NEVER does this at home."

And guess what? None of it shocks me.

Dogs are complicated. Behaviour is complicated. And sometimes the explanation sounds like a full-blown crime documentary with six witnesses and conflicting statements.

That's why I'm here.

My job isn't to judge you or your dog. It's to listen, ask questions, figure out what's actually happening, and help you both move forward.

So tell me the whole story. Even the weird parts.

Especially the weird parts. 🖤

No. That sir, is an actual princess.

All jokes aside, I don't allow strangers or unfamiliar dogs to freely interact with my dogs. Why?

Because exposure is far more valuable than interaction.

Somewhere along the way, we've confused socialization with allowing our dogs to meet every person and dog they encounter.

But that's not what proper socialization is about.

I don't need my dogs to think every stranger is their new best friend. I don't need them dragging me toward other dogs because they've learned that every encounter is an opportunity to interact.

I want neutrality. I want quality over quantity interactions.

I want my dogs to be able to exist in busy environments, walk past unfamiliar dogs, and be surrounded by people without feeling the need to engage with any of them.

I want them to understand that the world can exist around them without requiring their participation.

Unrestricted interactions can create expectations, frustration, overexcitement, and even reactivity when those expectations aren't met.

And here's something worth remembering: your dog doesn't owe anyone an interaction.

Not the stranger who wants to pet them. Not the person who insists their dog is friendly. Nobody.

Socialization isn't about how many dogs your dog meets or how many strangers pet them.

It's about building a dog that's confident, environmentally stable, and capable of remaining neutral regardless of what's happening around them.

Exposure builds confidence. Constant interaction builds expectations.

Stop focusing on making your dog everyone's friend and start teaching them how to simply exist in the world. 🖤

Advocate for your dog.

When your new client starts telling you about all the bu****it advice they got from their previous trainer, the THOUSANDS of dollars they spent "trusting the process", and the countless hours they wasted… just to end up with the exact same problems they started with. 💀

POV: When the recall with a whole pack of dogs is absolutely on point 😏

I am literally a ✨️God✨️ at this point, convince me otherwise. I'll wait 😎

The power has officially gone to my head. 😂

Why Is a Good Recall So Important?

Because “he usually comes back” isn’t the same as a reliable recall.

A solid recall can be the difference between:
▪︎ Your dog coming back instead of chasing wildlife
▪︎ Getting your dog away from a road or dangerous situation
▪︎ Avoiding an unwanted dog-to-dog interaction
▪︎ Ending a game of “catch me if you can”
❤️ And, most importantly, getting your dog back safely when it really matters.

Recall isn't just a party trick you practice in the backyard. It’s a *safety* skill that needs to hold up around distractions, excitement, distance, and real-world environments.

And no — your dog doesn't need to come running back perfectly every single time.

They need to understand that when you call, coming back to you is always worth it and not optional.

Every dog is different. We don't train on a 'one size fits all' program.

Even with excellent recall training, some dogs have strong genetic drives that can outweigh their desire to listen in certain moments. No amount of cookies can override a dog's genetics. The instinct to chase wildlife or fast-moving objects can be incredibly powerful.

For many dogs, a solid recall foundation is all they need. For others, adding an e-collar provides the extra layer of communication and accountability needed to achieve the level of reliability most owners are looking for.

An e-collar is not a shortcut or a punishment - it's a communication tool. When introduced fairly and conditioned properly, it allows you to communicate with your dog at a distance, creating clarity, consistency, and confidence.

Not only can this course help you build an incredibly reliable recall, but it also teaches you how to use the e-collar in a variety of everyday situations. From reinforcing known behaviours to improving off-leash reliability and maintaining communication in high-distraction environments, the possibilities extend far beyond just "come."

If you're ready to take your dog's training to the next level and enjoy more freedom with confidence, this course is for you.

When you got your dog, what was your vision? I know mine was always to live that Kootenay lifestyle.

Hiking trails, camping weekends, lake days, and mountain adventures are even better when your dog has the freedom to explore safely. But off-leash privileges aren't a right—they're earned through a reliable recall.

Recall is about so much more than just coming when called. It's about safety, connection, and freedom. It's the peace of mind that your dog will choose you over the squirrel, the deer, or the oncoming dog. It's building a relationship that's stronger than distractions.

Join us for our 4-week Recall Class and learn how to create a reliable recall through clear communication, motivation, and real-world training.
