Eye injuries can happen in an instant, whether it’s during play, a walk through the woods, or even a scratch from another pet. While some may seem minor, eye problems can worsen quickly and may threaten your pet’s vision if left untreated.

Meet Our Founders | Dr. Laura Crawford

Every great team is built on passionate people, and today we’re excited to introduce another one of the founders of BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood, Dr. Laura Crawford.

Dr. Laura graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2011 and has been practicing veterinary medicine in Ontario ever since.

Growing up on a dairy farm instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the realities many pet owners face. She believes in spectrum of care medicine and knows that clear communication and compassion are essential to helping families make the best decisions for their pets.

Ask Dr. Laura what she loves most about being a veterinarian, and she’ll tell you it’s that no two days are ever the same. That’s one of the reasons she enjoys working at BayVETS Urgent Care. Every shift brings new challenges, new learning opportunities, and another chance to help pets and the people who love them.

Dr. Laura has also recently added endoscopy to her skill set and enjoys using minimally invasive techniques to remove foreign objects whenever possible. She’s proud to offer this specialized service as part of the care available at BayVETS.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Laura is a wife and mother of two young children. Her family includes a dog, a cat, and, thanks to some convincing from the kids, a growing tank full of fish!

🤮 Is your pet vomiting? Should you be concerned?

Sometimes the cause is simple, like a mild upset stomach. Other times, vomiting can be a sign of something much more serious, including a foreign body, pancreatitis, kidney or liver disease, toxin ingestion, or other systemic illnesses.

The challenge is that it isn’t always possible to tell the difference at home.

If your pet is vomiting repeatedly, won’t eat, seems lethargic, has diarrhea, has a painful abdomen, or you suspect they may have swallowed something they shouldn’t have, they should be assessed by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Depending on the cause, treatment may be as simple as medications and supportive care, or your pet may require diagnostics such as blood work, X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, or even surgery.

At Bay VETS Urgent Care Collingwood we’re here to help determine the cause and guide you toward the most appropriate treatment for your pet.

🍔 Backyard BBQs Are Fun… Until Your Pet Helps Themselves! 🌭

Summer cookouts are a favourite, but some BBQ foods can quickly turn into an urgent veterinary visit.

Keep these foods out of reach:

🌽 Corn cobs – Can become lodged in the intestines and often require surgery.

🦴 Cooked bones – They can splinter, causing choking, intestinal injury, or obstruction.

🍢 Wooden skewers – If swallowed, they can puncture the stomach or intestines.

🧅 Onions & garlic – Toxic to both dogs and cats, even in burgers, marinades, or leftovers.

🍇 Grapes & raisins – Even small amounts can cause kidney failure in some dogs.

🥓 Fatty foods – Greasy burgers, bacon, and sausage can trigger pancreatitis, leading to vomiting, abdominal pain, and hospitalization.

🍺 Alcohol – Even small amounts can be dangerous for pets.

🍫 Chocolate desserts – Chocolate contains compounds that are toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, tremors, seizures, and heart problems.

If your pet sneaks something from the BBQ, don’t wait for symptoms to become severe. Some foreign bodies and toxins require prompt treatment, and early intervention often leads to a better outcome.

Meet Our Founders – Dr. Jacquie Pankatz

For many local families, Dr. Jacquie Pankatz is a familiar face. Born and raised in Collingwood, she has dedicated her veterinary career to caring for the pets of the community she proudly calls home. As a co-founder of BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood, she brings nearly 30 years of experience in family practice, emergency medicine, and advanced diagnostic imaging.

After graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College, Jacquie worked alongside Dr. Jim Bell before opening her own veterinary practice in downtown Collingwood. In 2007, she relocated Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital, and in 2022 she took over Collingwood Veterinary Services from Dr. Sean Lawes after his retirement continuing its tradition as a locally owned veterinary practice.

Early in her career, Jacquie balanced family practice with after-hours emergency medicine before dedicated emergency and urgent care hospitals existed. She later served on the Board of Directors of the Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic and developed a passion for diagnostic ultrasound, endoscopy, and minimally invasive procedures. Today, she provides advanced ultrasound services for her own hospitals and more than 30 veterinary hospitals throughout Southern Georgian Bay and beyond.

Inspired by the after-hours urgent care model in human healthcare, Jacquie helped create BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood to bridge the gap between family practice and emergency hospitals, providing timely, compassionate care when pets need it most.

Outside of work, Jacquie shares her home with her spouse, two sons, and Labrador Retrievers Betty and Wilma. Growing up on Georgian Bay inspired a lifelong passion for the water, and she enjoys boating among the Georgian Bay islands, scuba diving, and travelling to the Canadian Arctic, where she has developed a special fascination with the region’s wildlife and landscape and especially its polar bears.

Jacquie is proud to continue serving the community where she grew up and helping shape the future of veterinary care in South Georgian Bay through BayVETS Urgent Care Collingwood.

A quiet moment with Poppy. ❤️

This sweet moment happened this weekend.

Not every act of veterinary care happens on an exam table.

Sometimes it’s simply sitting on the floor, offering a cuddle, and helping a patient feel safe.

If you’ve lived in the Collingwood area for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve met Val or heard her voice on the phone. She has spent many years caring for pets and supporting their families and is one of the dedicated veterinary professionals who gives her time after regular clinic hours to help provide urgent care through BayVETS.

In fact, many of our team members work at local veterinary clinics and come together after hours to help make BayVETS possible, ensuring pets in our community have access to care when they need it most.

We also want to sincerely thank our community for the incredible support you’ve shown since we opened. BayVETS was built by locals for locals and the pets and families of our region, and your trust means the world to us. We truly are a community effort, and we’re grateful to be here for you and your pets.

It’s moments like these that remind us that compassion is just as important as medicine.
