Hey everyone! Tammy here, your Lantra Certified Bit and Bridle Fitter. I just came across some fascinating research comparing snaffle bridles (SB) and double bridles (DB), and I had to share it with you—because let’s be honest, we all want our horses comfortable and performing their best, right?
Here’s the scoop:
🔹 Poll Pressure is Real
The study confirmed what many of us already know—the DB’s extra weight (almost 1kg heavier!) does increase pressure on the poll. But here’s the good news: a wide, well-padded headpiece can make a huge difference. If your horse is in a DB, take a close look at that headpiece fit—your horse’s comfort depends on it.
🔹 Nosebands – It’s All About Fit
The researchers adjusted a standard cavesson nosebands to a 2-finger tightness (just like we recommend!), and guess what? Pressures on the nose and jaw were similar between SB and DB. But—and this surprised me—the DB actually had lower nasal pressure in walk and canter. Food for thought!
🔹 Rein Tension Myths Busted
Some riders worry that a DB means harsher rein pressure. Not true! The study found that skilled riders actually used less force on the curb rein compared to the bridoon or a snaffle. It’s proof that refinement, not force, is what matters.
My Takeaway?
A well-fitted DB isn’t inherently harder on your horse—but it does demand attention to detail. The right padding, balanced weight, and a rider’s educated hands make all the difference.
My Personal Side Note
Older style bits tend to be made heavier metals then newer bits which are lighter due to metal composition and overalll thickness of the mouthpieces. Consider parting ways with those 20mm thick bits 👍
