Not only does our region see floods in the early spring, wildfires until the end of summer, but we have also experience severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Animals can be very sensitive to changes in weather. Some pets suffer extreme distress before a storm or an environmental threat even hits. Look for signs such as excessive panting or water consumption, destructive behavior, or bolting. If you have a pet that becomes nervous during a storm it's best to confine them to an indoor space to prevent them from running off and becoming lost. Ensure your pet has collar with a tag and contact number along with a microchip.

And lets not forget about our livestock friends. For more information on how to manage livestock during emergencies please visit FEMA's website at https://training.fema.gov/emiweb/downloads/is10_a-8.pdf

Part of preparation is having an action plan and ensuring everyone in your family knows what to do. Make sure your plan also includes provisions for your pets.

When disaster strikes, quite often pets can be a last consideration. Pets can act differently under high stress situations causing you to take extra precautions to keep your pet safe. Having a small go bag packed for your pet can make a difference and reduce stress.

Items for your pet emergency kit can be stored in a small bag, a carrier/kennel or even a tote. Consider packing such things as food, dishes, bottled water, a blanket, a copy of your pet's vaccines records, collar, leash, a toy. etc.

For cats, a small container with a lid with litter already in it or a tin foil roaster pan and a zip lock for litter is handy. Cat carriers or a pillow case are strongly recommended as cats usually are the first to run and the best at hiding!
