WHEN NOT TO STEP IN! ⛔️
As humans we are mostly empathic creatures and it's human nature to want to rush in to help our family, friends and dogs in times of need, or if they get hurt or injured! BUT... sometimes this can have the opposite effect on our dogs (& kids)!
Believe me, I've seen this time & time again! E.g. a client accidentally treads on their dog's paws or tail and the dog was unphased and totally fine about it. But the human runs over in a panicked voice, apologetic and feeling sorry for their dog! Then the dog starts stressing and thinks that something is terribly wrong because their human is upset, and suddenly you have a dog that becomes fearful of your feet and worries whenever you walk near them!
Frankie enjoys walking, climbing and balancing along bleachers! She can easily jump from each bench - I've seen her do it many times! Every time we walk by some, she'll stop and ask me to play her favourite game! I never force her to do it!
Today, it was raining so I didn't want her slipping off! But she's very persistent and we passed four different bleachers and each time she stopped to ask me! [She's also got me partly trained! 😁]. Plus, there was a time Frankie hated being out in the rain, but we play a lot of games when it's wet to make the walk more enjoyable, so now she quite enjoys the rain! 💦
So we played the game and of course she slipped off as they were wet, but she wasn't injured and totally undeterred by the experience! It didn't traumatize her!!
Now - if I had've rushed over and made a big fuss of her falling off the bleachers, this would've made her anxious and create a negative association to the blachers for her, and she most likely would've avoided climbing them again in future!
When dogs hurt themselves, (non serious), they jump up shake it off and carry on! This is how dogs deal with things and I've worked with some very clumsy dogs over the years! 🤭
Be like Frankie...shake it off and carry on! 💫🥰
