In celebration of world bee day, here some fun facts about bees and tips on what to do if your pet has been stung by a bee:
Pets, especially dogs, love to to snap, paw and swat at anything that goes bzzz. As a result, they often end up being stung on their paws or muzzle. If your pet has been stung please consider the following:
1)If possible, remove the stinger by gently scraping it off using your nail or other blunt object such as a bank card. If using tweezers, trying and avoid squeezing the venom sac as you grab the stinger.
2)An icepack or cold towel may bring temporary relief to the site of swelling but is often not necessary.
3)Monitor your pet for any signs of an allergic reaction. These may include a difficulty in breathing, wheezing, become increasingly distressed and agitated/aggressive, extreme swelling around the neck/face, hives, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
4)Avoid administering any form of medication such as antihistamines without consulting a vet. An overdose may be more lethal than the actual sting.
5)If you suspect that your pet is having an allergic reaction, especially if they have been attacked by a swarm of bees, please contact a vet immediately.
