Bahamas Cat Island Cripps Poitier Sharing the mystical and wondrous Cat Island Life with you

07/01/2020

Well New Year is here, and I spent a lovely holiday season with my close Family in the UK. Terribly cold, but that is why I left forty years ago ! The tourist season is upon us and it is good to see plenty of activity around this island. We were lucky not to be affected by Hurricane Dorian last year, and our island looks very green and overgrown, since we have not had a storm in two years now. I found some interesting plants in my travels on the island last year, and am hoping that Kew Gardens in London can give names to them.
Otherwise the sun is out and warming with cool nights and our beaches are awaiting your footprints.

Cat Island is enjoying wonderful sunny weather, as we wait for our first returning winter residents and guests. We have been lucky not to have seen any heavy storms this year, but the rains from hurricane Dorian have helped turn this lush island into an evergreen wonderment. Our thoughts go to the northern islands smashed by Dorian, but already back in business in some parts.

Our tourist season is well underway and it is good to see how these people are enjoying our lovely sunny weather and transparent seas. It is still cold for us locals to enjoy swimming, but for northerly winter people it is great, and so clear. As those who are in the know, Cat Island is less visited than the other Family Islands or Nassau and Freeport, and that is our main charm. You can easily find a beach to yourself, and just walking on those long Atlantic beaches, collecting shells and glass, or snorkeling off the beach, are so rewarding for all those stressed people who so enjoy the solitude and peace that you find here. If you haven't tried the Bahamas Family Islands for your vacation than you have not found the REAL Bahamas.

Well november is here and the summer in Cat Island has been wonderful with hot days and cooling breezes up here on top of our hill. We hardly used a fan this summer at night, and the days we just opened every door and let the breezes keep us cool. We had some unsettling news in that our airline to Nassau SkyBahamas decided that they did not want to come to Arthurs Town airport anymore and we only have the option of driving 30 miles south to New Bight, But news is that our airport is in good shape and we may have two other airlines flying to AT very soon. I was asked to help with the grass mowing since I have a tractor and bushhog mower so I have spent 10 hours today mowing the perimeter of the runway. Another ten hours and we shall be ready to greet our winter guests in the north of Cat.

Good news from Cat Island. We were hardly aware of Hurricane Maria apart from 20-30mph winds which even felt cool coming from the north. The sea is a bit of a mess at the moment, and unfortunately we still have had no rain up here on the hill. All the solar panels are back up and running well with beautiful sunny days and cool evenings now the days are getting shorter.

Well we are out of harms way from Irma, and our thoughts are for the lower Cays and of course our friends in Florida who are about to experience 48 hours of hell. Jose is now thinking about coming this way, but seems to be going in circles for the moment, but at least we are already ready. Took down the solar panels and will put minimum back up tomorrow, leaving the other two houses off for the short term depending on Jose.
All safe in Cat Island and waiting for our guests to start the winter season.😎😍

Well hurricane season is upon us again and poor Texas had to take the brunt of this latest one. As one gets older it is always a testing time, since there is so much preparation to be done just before a storm, with wind generators and solar panels to be taken down. But at least when the main power gets hit and damage occurs island wide, I am up and running 24 hours after the storm. I have proved over the last nineteen years the value of my own electricity supply, and why this Country has not used solar is beyond my comprehension. Let's hope that with the new Government it can be looked at sensibly especially in these small community Family Islands.

Cat Island is very dry, but some of the island has rain, just not up here.
Still the sea is getting much warmer and the beaches are wonderfully empty as usual . No footprints on our north beach !!
