Fun facts about Cardinal Tetras
1. They're the Amazon's "Living Jewels":
Cardinal Tetras are incredibly popular in the aquarium trade, accounting for a significant portion of ornamental fish exports from the Amazon. Their vibrant, iridescent blue stripe running the length of their body, contrasted with a vivid red stripe below, makes them one of the most stunning freshwater fish.
2. Color-Changing Camouflage:
Their striking colors aren't just for show! The intensity and even hue of their blue stripe can change depending on the angle of light hitting them. At night or in darkness, their stripes can appear transparent or brown, helping them blend into their surroundings and avoid predators.
3. Often Confused with their "Neon" Cousins:
Cardinal Tetras are very similar in appearance to Neon Tetras. The key difference is that the Cardinal Tetra's red stripe extends the entire length of its body, from nose to tail, while the Neon Tetra's red coloration only goes about halfway to the nose.
4. Wild vs. Captive Lifespan:
In their natural habitat in the Amazon, Cardinal Tetras may only live for about a year. However, in a well-maintained aquarium, they can live for several years, often growing larger than their wild counterparts.
5. Shy Shoalers of the Shaded Waters:
In the wild, Cardinal Tetras are found in shallow, slow-moving waters of the Amazon basin, often in areas heavily shaded by the rainforest canopy. They are schooling fish, preferring to be in groups of six or more. While they can form large shoals when sensing danger, they often forage in smaller, more modest numbers in their natural environment.
