We were asked to help beautiful Maeve today, another rescue dog from Homeless Hounds Animal Rescue Australia who came into care with some terrible matting and hates being groomed (she's feisty and not afraid to let you know with a nip). Given some of her matting and the fact she has some skin issues that made her really uncomfortable, we knew we'd have our work cut out for us. In the end, we got there...... Please dont let your non-shedder dogs get to a point where they have knots. Its very painful for the dog and makes grooming a traumatic experience (which we think is what she has experienced in the past). Her carer has experience with these little dogs and asked us to help because we do too (with rescue dogs). She is now feeling so much better, and we have provided her carer with hints on what upsets her during grooming (like no clippers from the shoulders up, as it really distresses her - we used scissors and she was quite cooperative and much happier after we removed intense facial knotting which must have been causing her pain). We have recommended that Maeve be groomed more regularly than your average dog so that its less traumatic and she doesnt have any matting to deal with. We also advised that scissors around the head, ears and face are what she is ok with.....which will make her grooms easier for all involved.
