There are only a few places in Australia where you can study to be a veterinarian. This is a remarkable gift

***Disclaimer - this is not a reason to avoid vaccinating your dog. Vaccine reactions are a function of an individual pets immune response ***

About an hour after her C5 vaccine, little Lunas face puffed up like a balloon. With her regular vet closed for the night, she arrived and recieved care for an anaphylactic reaction secondary to her C5 vaccine. With some adrenaline (to bring up her heart rate and blood pressure) and fluids for shock she responded magnificently and next morning was able to go home!! For future vaccinations Lunas family will work with her regular vet team and have a plan along the lines of: taking an antihistamine before her vaccination to head off an allergic reaction, organising a morning appointment so she can stay and be observed by her veterinary team, utlising a different brand of vaccine and titre testing for her ongoing vaccine programme.

Meet Komi who received some urine testing and antibiotics for a bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI). Dogs of all breeds and ages (5 months) can suffer from bladder infections but generally most commonly seen in female dogs. UTI's are painful infections and may be caused by crystals, bacteria, or some diseases or medications.
If you are uncertain the most common signs: needing to p*e more often, straining to p*e, blood in their p*e, smelly p*e, accidents getting out in time to p*e and alot of licking their ge***al area, which often becomes irritated or inflamed. They don't tend to improve by themselves and need help of a vet.

With the quick action of her family Peaches was able to be stabilised in hospital and then have surgery to remove her uterus. Pyometra happens in older female dogs who have not been sterilised due to the real and absolute fear of them having anaesthetic, their current health, the worry about them successfully getting through surgery, family changes and a whole range of reasons to respect.

If you are ever in this situation the key signs to look for are: they just seem out of sorts, not so eager to eat and showing signs of pain. Using our ultrasound we found her uterus was enlarged with fluid. The blod test showed only small change in her white blood cells and her uterine fluid sampling showed no active infection in her uterus.

Abit of science - Pyometra happens when the uterus becomes fluid filled and greatly enlarged, usually after a heat. The hormonal changes cause the uterine lining to become abnormal and secrete mucusy fluid. This fluid becomes infected as bacteria enter from the lower reproductive tract. Patients absorb that bacterial toxin making them quickly feel very unwell.

Peaches is home now, but during her stay she was the sweetest gentle lady (she is 13) with extra thick mattress and boundless blankets to keep her warm💛💓💛

Meet Pickles who at 2, is just going from Junior to Adult in life stages. His family noticed under his jaw suddenly got very swollen. Turns out he had an inflamed right submandibular lymph node. (These nodes live on the left and right hand side of a cats jaw.) When they swell suddenly like this it can be either an infection or something more sinister. He got transferred to Murdoch where a CT scan indicated an infection which needed to be surgically removed. He is now back home. Being a happy cat again. 😻😽😻😽😻😽😻😽😻

This photo is of Tutu being nursed in a baby wildlife bag to help calm her and make her feel comfortable in hospital when things became overwhelming.

Tutu presented with acute vomiting and diarrhoea with blood in it and was quite depressed. She was fully vaccinated.

Blood tests revealed dehydration, a low blood glucose level (possible infection) and signs of shock (acidic blood).

The diagnosis was HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis ) a serious acute condition needing urgent treatment with IV fluids
and supportive care. Thankfully she responded very well to intensive treatment and is now home.

HGE is a common serious disease that can cause rapid dehydration and shock with a significant death rate. It is thought to be caused by eating toxic material - for example rotting organic matter (food, compost etc) and the ingested bacterial toxins damage the gut lining causing severe fluid loss and bacterial absorption with secondary shock and organ damage. Often the cause is not found but dogs are notorious for eating things that we find quite disgusting !

One of our teams dogs had an episode a few years ago and we were unable to find the cause. She became unwell to the point of being unable to walk and semiconscious within a couple of hours

Googs had successful surgery and recovery from a furball stuck in the middle section of the small intestine. As a maine c**n managing that long fur is a full time mission! Cats can benefit from being brushed a couple of times a week to help with managing their coat and magnificent fur 💓signs that he was unwell were: a lot of vomits and a very sore abdomen (like spicy don’t touch type abdomen)

You know how we like to ask questions when you meet us, well after a consult about Douglas this is what we knew - 3 changes:

1. He came to hospital because he kept down treats and water during the day, but after his last 3 dinners he just looked uncomfortable, and each time threw up about 5 hours afterwards.
2. was just too quiet for a young lad
3. and he had run into a roped fence hitting his guts.

His care escalated to an ultrasound showing he had a twisted spleen (splenic torsion) which is uncommon serious emergency mostly seen in big dog breeds like German shepherds and other large breeds, think Great Dane etc.

What happens in deep chested breeds is the spleen, which has enormous blood vessels and is a very fragile organ can spin and twist, cutting off the blood supply causing a lot of damage. This can happen on its own or more common is the stomach that spins first causing stomach torsion which as many followers know....is a type of GDV which we cover every so often to help spread the word

Splenic torsions can come on suddenly with abdominal pain, vomiting and dogs go into shock (pale gums and collapse). Douglas’s situation was rarer, in that his condition had brewed over days.

Douglas went straight into surgery where his spleen was too damaged to be saved. Whilst in surgery he also had a preventative stomach pexy where his stomach was stitched in place to try and prevent a future stomach torsion.

He is doing very well at home. Did you know dogs can cope very well without their spleen? These photos are of him after one of his post-surgery checkups.

Red back spider cat-astrophe 😢
Please share with those you know that cats are particularly sensitive to red back spider bites

The impact of their venom and sp*ed of deterioration is written in scientific forums but recovery rarely see in hospital but young Master Ronald Weasley did!!

After arriving in shock and shallow breathing with horrid blood pressure numbers he began treatment.

He stayed awhile in hospital but this little joyous floof of ginger is home, back to his energetic self, running around and causing chaos💛💛

Like human blood, dog blood contains life saving components such as: red blood cells, plasma or even platelets. For your dog to be a volunteer blood donor consider whether they are:

Healthy. Happy. Vacinated. Between 1 – 8 years old and more than 25kg

On becoming a volunteer in our blood donor programme we run a complimentary health check. This is to understand their health, their history and see how they go being in a hospital. Still interested? E; [email protected] or call: 9200 4460 to find out more
