🐍 Where Have All the Snakes Gone? Understanding Brumation! 🐍

As the cooler weather settles across the Riverina, many people assume snakes have disappeared completely. The truth is, they’re often just slowing down.

During the colder months, snakes enter a state called brumation – similar to hibernation, but not quite the same. Their metabolism slows right down, meaning they need less food and become much less active. They spend their time sheltering in places such as:

✅ Hollow logs
✅ Rock crevices
✅ Burrows
✅ Under sheds and other structures
✅ Dense ground cover

On warmer winter days, it’s still possible to spot a snake out basking in the sun. While call-outs become less frequent, snakes don’t simply disappear for winter.

If you do happen to come across a snake, keep a safe distance and give me a call.

While we’re now moving into autumn and call-outs usually begin to slow down, the warmer weather we’ve been having lately has definitely kept snakes active across the Riverina.

Many people think cooler weather means snakes disappear overnight — but that’s not always the case. On warmer autumn days, snakes will still come out to bask in the sun and remain on the move.

Remember to keep an eye around:
☀️ Sheds
☀️ Wood piles
☀️ Gardens
☀️ Under houses
☀️ Around pet areas and outdoor storage

If you come across a snake, keep a safe distance and leave it to the professionals.
