We Understand Your Grief—Because We Feel It Too
Beautiful Milo, a gentle greyhound with a soft soul, was recently laid to rest after being diagnosed with an osteosarcoma (boney cancer) in his shoulder. While some pets experience a disease trajectory of gradual deterioration over time, as with chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, others diseases cause a much more rapid deterioration. This was the case for Milo, and once his pain could no longer be adequately managed, his devoted owner—our friend and colleague Cassie—made the heartbreaking but courageous decision to say goodbye. Milo was deeply loved, and Cassie's selfless choice ensured his final moments were filled with comfort, dignity, and peace.
Cassie's dog Willow is slowly adjusting to the loss of her beloved companion, but some old separation anxiety has begun to resurface. Just like people, dogs can grieve deeply—often showing signs such as anxiety, withdrawal, restlessness, or changes in appetite.

Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking. As your veterinary team, we want you to know that we don’t just witness your grief—we feel it too.
We’ve cared for your pets as if they were our own. We’ve cuddled them during exams, cheered them through recovery, and whispered gentle words during their final moments. When we say goodbye to a patient, we feel that loss deeply. It stays with us.
But we also know this pain firsthand.
Every one of us has loved and lost a pet of our own. We’ve walked through the silence after they’re gone. We’ve cried at empty food bowls and missed the jingle of collars. We’ve made that impossible decision with breaking hearts.
So when you’re grieving, please know you’re not alone. We understand your sorrow not just professionally, but personally. Your grief is valid. Your pain is seen. And your pet was loved—by you, and by us.
