This sad case serves as a timely reminder of the importance of vigilance and awareness regarding Hendra virus, particularly when dealing with sick unvaccinated horses. The Zoetis Vaccine is our primary defense against this fatal disease. This registered vaccine was introduced in 2012 with almost 1.2 million doses given to nearly 240,000 horses nationwide. It has provided a significant public health and workplace health and safety benefit by reducing the risk of Hendra virus transmission to humans and other susceptible animals.

Other management practices that can be implemented to protect you and your horse are as follows:

🐴 Reduce Flying Fox Contact With Horses.
🦄 Moving food and water containers from under trees where flying foxes may roost or feed
🦄 restrict horse's access to trees occupied by flying foxes by fencing where possible
🦄 remove fruit and debris from under trees that have been occupied by flying foxes

🐴 Hygiene and biosercurity measures
🦄 handwashing after handling horses
🦄 personal protective equipment - eg. gloves
🦄 equipment hygiene - eg. disinfection of horses handling equipment
🦄 isolate sick horses
🦄 report suspect cases by contacting your vet

Watch this space as Dr Sophie has been busy organising a special offer for you to save money and protect your horse and family from this fatal disease.

MEDIA RELEASE | Veterinarians urge vigilance and vaccination following Hendra virus case in Queensland

Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA), a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), has reinforced the importance of vaccination and biosecurity after Biosecurity Queensland today confirmed a case of Hendra virus in an unvaccinated horse in south-east Queensland.

Dr Laura Hardefeldt, EVA President, expressed strong support for the veterinarian who managed the case and reiterated the critical role of horse owners in preventing the spread of this deadly disease.

“We commend the referral veterinarian for their swift and professional response, which undoubtedly helped contain the risk to people and other animals,” said Dr Hardefeldt.

“This case is a stark reminder that Hendra virus remains a real and present threat. Vaccination is the best defence we have to protect horses, veterinarians, and the broader community.”

As most of you are aware, I'm currently sidelined with ligament damage to my ankle, so I'm using this opportunity to take a family holiday to the warmer regions of the country. I'll be back on deck on 14th July. If you're interested in making a booking, please send me a message, as my phone service is unreliable, and I'll be in touch on 14th July. Meanwhile, take a look at this article, as it's relevant to horse owners in the Lockyer Valley who are currently facing this crisis.

The case of the vanishing vet

In July’s Equestrian Hub Magazine, we look at the issue of the often cut-price equine dental services offered by practitioners other than trained vets, and at the shortage of equine vets, which is becoming more and more of a problem. If you’re curious to know why there’s a connection between these two topics, you really mustn’t miss this article – the answer may surprise you!

Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and we can see him next season. 🐎

Alabar, Nevele R Stud, and Diamond Creek Farm regret to announce that Always B Miki will not be shuttling to Australia for the upcoming 2025 breeding season.

Due to a lower leg injury, Always B Miki missed the end of the American stud season and is currently restricted to stall rest as he continues his rehabilitation.

While the injury is not life-threatening, it has unfortunately ruled him out of international travel and stud duties in Australasia this year.

The timing of this setback is particularly disappointing given Always B Miki’s outstanding success as a sire across Australasia.

He is currently enjoying a remarkable run, having shared top honours with Art Major as the leading sire of Australian Group 1 winners last season.

In 2025, his progeny continue to shine, including the undefeated NSW Derby champion Always Hot and the New Zealand bred dual Group 1 winner Mister Smartee.
