Spring time is here! 🐎🏵🌾
I often have clients asking "how many weeks should we do between trims"
Well at this time of year I recommend a shorter trimming schedule for most horses and ponies.
Their feet tend to grow quicker at this time of year with the warmer weather and spring grass growth.
I also hear "Im sorry their feet are a bit long, they were ok the other day when I checked now they are cracking and chipped"
I find this is because many owners will just look at the hoof without picking it up. And while a healthy well trimmed hoof may stay in great shape as it grows, you will see when you pick it up and look underneath that there is indeed quite a bit of growth!
A reminder to pick the hoof up and clean it out to see where they are at in their trim cycle to accurately decided how often they need to be trimmed to prevent damage to the hoof.
The warm and sometimes wet conditions of spring is party time for all the bugs that love to make homes in our horses feet. Seedy toe, white line disease, thrush and abscesses are very common at this time of year. Regular hoof trimming is the best prevention for these pathologies.
I have added some photos of my sister standardbed geldings feet.
We have our horses on a 4 week trimming schedule.
The photos will show while Spartan's feet look great still from the top he has got good growth for just 4 weeks!
He also has a past hoof injury that has resulted in permanent damage to the outer hoof wall. But with his 4 week trim schedule I am able to mange it so the bugs dont move in and start their partying.
I recommend trimming cycles of 4-5 weeks over spring time. But every horse is different. Some dont require shorter trim cycles. Some horses grow faster than others some hardly grow at all!
Send me a message if you would like to book your horses or ponies in for trims. We can work out together what trim cycle best suits your horses or ponies for strong and healthy hooves 🐎🐴
