Willow's Leap Nestled in the beautiful Wollombi Valley at the south end of the NSW Hunter Valley, we are an equest If you can bring any with you it is much appreciated!

Nestled between the beautiful Hunter Valley and scenic Central Coast, Willow's Leap is an equestrian training facility within easy reach of both Sydney and Newcastle. Our team:-

Lyndel Taylor - Currently eventing at One Star level, Lyndel has been riding for 30 years and is in the process of finishing her EFA Level I Instructor training. Her love for riding and passion for cross country grew up f

rom dragging a succession of native ponies after her local Hunt in North Yorkshire; a little more 'Thelwell' than the elegant jumping you see from her today! The Hunt never caught the fox, but did catch Lyndel's interest! She is available by appointment for individual lessons and clinics (specialising in the cross country aspect but happy to teach beginners and novices at show jumping and dressage too), and also has a limited capacity to accept horses for training. She will travel locally if you would prefer your horse trained at home. Phil Janson - Behind most of our jump design, building and photography, Phil does what he is told. But he secretly enjoys it...
As well as making jumps for Willow's Leap, he has supplied portable jumps to Wollombi and Mount Sugarloaf Pony Clubs, as well as assisting Darryl Burgess from Boonoona Designs making fixed and portable jumps on site. He is available for jump advice, and if he can't help you build then will point you in the right direction. On site we have:
Cross Country training jumps ranging from Encourager to One Star
Showjump paddock
Grass dressage arena
Fully qualified emergency medical support at all times

We have limited water - whilst we will always provide some for your horses to drink, we do not have enough to offer wash bays at this time. Whilst we love dogs, bringing your own is strictly prohibited. If we already know them, we may be happy for you to bring your own instructor. However, due to our insurance they must be EFA (or similar) registered and insured. All our other normal rules still apply. We have regular clinics with other fabulous instructors too, such as Belinda Bailey, Level II coach educator and Emma Mason, 4* eventer and local superstar. Please make sure you 'like' the site and add to one of your 'interest lists' to continue to get updates, photos from out and about on the Eventing scene and clinic dates. If you see our truck, make sure you come and say hi!

Who else spends time walking? Our horses all get regular walk days. When they’re coming back into work after a break, they only walk for the first 2-4 weeks. So good for everyone involved- including me!

They W-I-L-L N-O-T D-O I-T.

Will not do what? Use active walks for strength training as an. add-on to their regular training schedules. Eventers, show jumpers, dressage riders, whoever could gain benefit from having stronger equine athletes.

What are you talking about?

Well, this---In 1974 Jack LeGoff had a shallow bench of advanced 3-day horses to send to the World Championshipd to be held in September at Burghley. He had six riders and six horses, zero extras if one got hurt. He wanted to maximize their fitness, because cross country day, back then, would be over 17 miles long, and would require one hour and twenty minutes of trotting and galloping.

So he used vigorous long walks three days a week in addition to the normal schools. So say we did 45 minutes of flat work in the morning, which, with warmup and cool down might take an hour, give or take. Then, in the afternoon, say Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, he would have us saddle up again after lunch, and go hike around the open hills at Wylie. About one to one and a half hours, as I remember, each walk day.

Walks do not stress horses much. They are highly unlikely to cause injury. They build base strength and create muscular development. They are a win-win.

But virtually NOBODY does this, Most human sports teams now employ strength coaches because when technique starts to fail, raw strength can create that winning edge. Why would human horse trainers not want stronger horses?

But does ANYONE grasp this in 2024? Or, if they do, do they make the effort to actually do it?

There’s a hidden gorilla in the room, actually more of a train than a gorilla, It is called the Excuse Train. Nobody wants to admit being lazy, so they dig up reasons to deflect.

“I don’t have time.” That’s a big one.
“I don’t have a place to do it.”
I don’t have enough help.”

But the real reason is usually more basic, six words. “I don’t want to do it.”

Everyone wants an edge. Strength is an edge. There’s a reasonably safe and straightforward method to add strength, Take Jack’s advice or deny it----.

Here’s a little Christmas quiz for you; when are these beaut shots from?

Summer is heating up…. We hose our horses regularly, on the super hot days. If they are in a paddock that has a hose, they usually line up beside it!!! And no, we never scrape, in summer. After riding, I do focus on the big veins for rapid cooling, but not when it’s just HOT!!! Evaporation works

Wow, 500 posts on Insta; that snuck up on us! Here .leap , we’ve seen fire, and we’ve seen rain. We’ve been with you through pandemics, floods, bushfire evacuations, and more; not to mention the myriad of minor disasters along the way (have YOU had your float/car fixed by Phil to get you safely home after a clinic here?). We’ve welcomed riders and instructors from around the world, including Olympians, International dressage judges, high level competitors, and people jumping for their first time ever. We’ve catered for private lessons, and immersive weekend clinics with accommodation and meals included. Lyndel has guided hundreds of horses and riders to improve, as have all of our invited instructors. The one thing they all have in common? Doing the best for you, and your horse. Have you booked your next lesson/clinic/training/stay yet?

Beautiful Venus is looking for her next human…. This cracker of a horse is the real deal- she’s smart, sweet, super fun, and so so safe. Venus has done lots of pony club, zone showjumping, and interschools, and would be fantastic for a young rider. She’d also be amazing for an adult looking for a lovely horse, to do a little bit of everything with… she’s super versatile!
Link to her advert is in the comments….
