Not only are herbal teas full of wonderful health benefits for humans but they are good for dogs and cats too. 🐶🐱🫖

Herbal Teas 🫖

Herbal teas are not just for us humans, they are an amazing health addition to your pups or kitties meals.

Herbal tea is not actually "tea".
Herbal teas are made from tisanes, which are blends or infusions of dried fruits, flowers, spices or herbs in water. Tisanes have been shown to offer medicinal effects.

The health benefits from herbal teas are associated with specific antioxidants found in tea, known as polyphenols.
Herbal teas also have antiviral and anti microbial properties.

Polyphenols may offer protection against development of certain cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Polyphenols protect the body's tissues against oxidative stress.

Polyphenols are also a potent anti inflammatory. Polyphenol-rich tea extracts can promote the growth of beneficial bifido bacteria. Green tea polyphenols may help fight off harmful bacteria, including
C. difficile, E. Coli, and Salmonella,as well as improve symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease.

🫖 How to incorporate teas.

🫖 Brew the herbal tea, allow to cool, add to your pets meals warm.

🫖 Brew a mix of herbal teas and freeze in molds.

🫖 When making your vegetable purée mix, use herbal tea as the liquid instead of water.

🫖 When making bone broth, use a herbal tea as the liquid instead of plain water.

We want to use loose leaf teas, not teabags.
( teabags can be full of mold, they often contain a non-biodegradable plastic called polypropylene, which releases billions of microplastic particles every time you brew.

Some of my favourite teas
🌿 Green Tea ( caffeine free)
🌿 Chamomile
🌿 Marshmallow Root
🌿 Ginger
🌿 Parsley
🌿 Echinacea
🌿 Liquorice
🌿 Passionflower
🌿 Fennel
🌿 Nettle
🌿 Lemon Balm
🌿 Calendula
🌿 Rosehip

New to herbal teas ?
Start with chamomile.
Chamomile is an all rounder and great for gut health. It’s great for digestion, and is great for inflammation as well as the skin.

Have a dog with urinary issues ?
Parsley tea
Parsley has a mild diuretic effect, which helps flush UTI-causing bacteria out of the urinary tract.

Herbal teas are great for detoxification.

What’s your favourite herbal tea ?

My little soulmate is not well. Lila has congenital heart failure or CHF and lately she’s not been herself. On Tuesday we headed to the ACT to visit an holistic vet for Lila. It was well worth the 4 hour trip each way. After the 2 hour consultation I came away with so much information especially on the importance of the right nutrition. We are now fully armed with not just the heart medication that she has to be on but also Chinese herbs, homeopathic drops and vitamin supplements to support Lila’s heart and overall wellness. I highly recommend visiting an holistic vet for guidance if in the same situation.

I know that Lila’s CHF will not heal no matter how much I wish it would. It is palliative care and this realisation is hard to accept. I am writing a daily journal on caring for Lila to be included in a book I am writing about caring for older dogs, especially palliative care and dealing with the grief that begins even before saying goodbye to your beloved pet. Although writing helps, knitting let’s my mind focus on something else. That’s why I began the blanket for Lila…maybe that’s the title of the book.

We are giving Lila every chance to live each day with the best quality of life. And lots of love 💗

We have a stray ginger cat hanging around our house. Rohan caught it running after the chooks and this morning what I at first thought was a fox slinking around my hens abode, turns out to be ‘Ginger’. After chasing it away I now see it’s back sitting on the roof of the hen house meowing. Maybe it has identity issues and thinks it’s a chook seeing as they’re all red? 🤔 Don’t get me wrong I do like cats and have had them in my life. It’s the slack ‘enviro-friendly’ human owners who believe having a cat comes with minimal to no responsibility of where their ‘beloved’ kitty wanders day and night. Ginger is also blessed with having an owner who does not see the need to put a collar complete with bell around its furry little neck. As the only country in the WORLD with the highest record for native species extinction (YAY! Go OZ😏) it’s great to see this owner is supporting the cause and adding to the record.

Two dogs in two days lost to heatstroke and they were on morning walks!
Heatstroke! We’re not going to sugar coat this. You will not see the signs until it is too late!
This is an emergency and life-threatening condition. We have had several heatstroke calls in the past week alone and unfortunately for some, they didn’t make it. There is no guarantee that your beloved furry family member will pull through as they literally cook from the inside out and so owners aren’t aware they are suffering until it is already too late.
They don't cool down as easily as us and unlike us they can’t just take their coat off or sweat it out! Dogs regulate their body temperatures by panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and as a consequence, there aren’t a great deal of options for your pet if you’re walking them on hot cement and the days temperatures are already high. Despite the sun setting late and the afternoons extended light time, dogs shouldn’t be walking or exercising for several hours after the night has set in or after the sun is up in the morning. They should also not be on the back of the ute or left in cars without air-conditioning on.
Your dogs (and other pets) NEED to have fresh, cool water available – some might like to lay in a small pool if you have the means to facilitate this. Shade is a MUST and if it is within your means, bring them inside in the air conditioning.
Brachycephallic breeds are also more susceptible to heat stress. So those with Frenchies, Staffy's, Pug's and Bulldogs etc should be taking extra care during the sweaty season.
Clinically, what we see:
Excessive panting
- Body temps >40’C
- Inability to move (collapse)
- Seizures
- Prolonged coagulation times

PLEASE, we are begging you, make sure your pets are safe during this time of
year.

RIP Oscar 🐶 Thank you for starting a movement that made a positive change 💕

It’s hard to find the right words for this post.

This morning at 11.35, Oscar left us.

Almost a year ago, we shared that with his deteriorating health, the vet thought he only had a few days to live.

But ever the fighter – he pushed on, and made it to his sweet 16th only a few months ago.

This morning he let Deb know it was time, and he was able to go peacefully in her arms.

Oscar was a dog that started a movement. He changed and saved lives. It’s hard to comprehend the enormous impact that one little dog could have.

He was an icon and a hero – but most of all, he was Deb’s best friend.

We will have more to say about Oscar, his life and all he achieved soon – but for now, Deb needs time to process and grieve. We still can’t quite believe he’s gone.

Rest in peace, Oscar.
