CANINE COUGH OUTBREAK IN COMMUNITY:
The Maraboon Vet Surgery along with The Maraboon Pet Resort wish to inform the community that we are experiencing an outbreak of a contagious canine cough in our community currently. To ensure this virus is not introduced to our facility and guests, we ask that owners read the following information, and keep their animal’s home if they observe any symptoms.
Canine Cough, also known as infectious tracheobronchitis, is one of the most common respiratory diseases in dogs. It is an airborne virus and can travel large distances thus making it highly contagious and difficult to control. Dogs can become infected with Canine Cough wherever they gather, such as in parks, dog runs, obedience classes, dog shows or kennels.
The classical sign of Canine Cough is a harsh, hacking cough that often finishes with gagging. Canine cough should be suspected whenever the characteristic cough suddenly develops about 10 days after exposure to other susceptible or affected dogs. Usually severity diminishes during the first 5 days, but the disease persists for 10-20 days.
The Maraboon Pet resort is always extremely diligent on ensuring all pets are fully vaccinated on arrival, no unwell pets are allowed to board at our facility, and increased staffing to allow for increased sanitation processes during community outbreaks. However, unfortunately using boarding kennels presents a risk of catching the virus due to the fact that most dogs do not show any symptoms regardless of carrying the contagious virus. Therefore, it is important to recognise that despite implementing industries best practice and protocols, infection with the virus during boarding is a possibility. To avoid infection, it is recommended you take measures to avoid your pet socialising with any other pets if you would like to minimise your chances of your pet becoming affected.
Medical treatment is unlikely to be required unless you have concerns that your pets are experiencing additional symptoms to the loud cough. Despite this currently being the most common cause of coughing in dogs, there are other medical conditions that cause coughing that may require medical treatment, so if you have any reason to be concerned, speak to your vet. We also urge anyone whose dog is coughing for longer than the typical 3-10 days to seek medical attention.
