This is a good example of
a resect for seedy toe.
The farrier has obviously excavated all the affected hoof and has put a bar shoe on to provide support for the hoof. Resecting like this is often employed to expose bacteria to oxygen, killing it before it can work up any further. BUT, we obviously now have months of work protecting the hoof from new exposure to the seedy toe pathogen while new hoof wall grows down.
Hoof Clay would be a great option here to provide a barrier to reinfection. A thin smear of clay on the inside of the resect twice a week would be easy to apply for the owner and support the healing process. The core ingredient, Bentonite Clay is also permeable to oxygen so even though it provides a physical barrier, it also still permits oxygen exposure to any infection.
Stay Put Cream could also be used. The cream is pretty waterproof and has the added oomph of Kunzea Oil.
Again, it would just need to be smeared on the inside of the resect cavity twice a week.
Use just one or both to prevent further infection and promote a healthy bacterial environment!
