In between showers this morning I was out in the front rainforest area doing some trimming of the trees down one of the pathways and I could see Benny and Charlie in the window watching me and Benny was looking like he had something on his mind............
'Mamar, while you were outside I was watching tv (i need to hide the remote) and I saw they are looking for dogs to help blind people and I think I could do that. On the ad on tv the dogs were small and I am a little small Mamar so do you think they would consider me?' Dear Lord this is going to be one of those conversations with Benny.
Realizing Benny had seen the tv ad for Vision Australia and how they train puppies to be the incredible eyes for blind people, I had to explain to Benny that those were puppies being trained and that they would grow up to be big Labradors just like Echo was.
'So I cannot be a guide dog Mamar' Benny asked with a quiver in his voice. 'It's not fair I am not considered for any jobs cause of my age and my size and it is getting me angry Mamar, real angry because I have a lot to offer in this world'.... Benny stated with full gusto and I could see he was upset by all of the rejections he receives when applying for jobs. 'Benny, you have a very big job here at the Sanctuary so I wish you would take it more seriously and realize how valuable you are to me and Papar and all the other seniors' I told Benny. 'What do you mean Mamar?' asked Benny. 'Well, you keep us all so very safe from any intruders with your perimeter patrols several times a day and I know for a fact, that no one will break into the Sanctuary, not when you are around, awake, not asleep, or on your little pillow, snoring, watching tv, eating, I digress, you are our champion Benny, our protector, our hero and that is a big job you don't need another do you?'
With that, Benny's stuck out his chest, he strutted out towards the decks to make sure there were no intruders around and he then did a window and door patrol to ensure our safety. As he gave the 'all clear' I told him how much we rely on him to keep us safe and with that, Benny stated 'Okay Mamar, I will stop looking for another job to help out but just know, I am always ready to go where I am needed and I know how much steak costs right now so I just wanted to help out'..... my hero.... 👏👏👏
So Benny gave up his idea of becoming a guide dog, thankfully, because I just know if Benny was a guide dog and saw food, a tv, another dog, steak, a butcher shop, a crime scenes well let's just say he wouldn't have made the cut and besides, getting a guide dog harness on Benny would have been a challenge and we all know how distracted Benny can get so thankfully, he has given up on this idea..... a little dog, big ideas, little body, big appetite and a lot of love for everyone. 🥰
